    I spotted (sorry) this greater spotted woodpecker just outside the garden yesterday, which made me look up other similar photo's, and i found the larger green woodpecker too. The 3rd and much rarer variety is the smaller lesser spotted one, but i've never seen one

    Very nice. I rarely get to see the greater spotted and then only at a distance and normally partially obscured by branches.

    Thanks David, they are very skittish, this was a bit far away but luckily it’s a largish bird and the trees are just coming into leaf

    Shouldnt there also be the Black woodpecker in the UK?

    wow, that one sure likes making big holes (patterns) in trees.
    my friendly expert google didn't mention it, i assume the coast puts it off flying over

    I only assumed so because we (the Dutch) have them as well allthough they are kinda rare here but you might be right as it would take atleast about 145km of flight over the North Sea.
