A little "Street Photography" from NYC

As we look for a new home, I thought I would create my first thread and post with the venerable GRIIIx. Thank you for looking!

Welcome to the forums! Always enjoy watching street photography from cities like NY. Never been there myself, but always wanted to go. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dan! I've been jumping around between forums and this looks like a good place to be! The weather is warming up now, so I hope to post more "street" photos in the coming months. NYC is a great place for photography. I even give bird photography a try in the spring and fall migrations through Central Park.

Great to see you here, too! Excuse me if I'm not doing this correctly as I figure out how to leave the quotes or not. Haven't figured out how to post a photo in the thread yet and my first photos appeared as attachments. Getting used to doing it a new way. I'll post one last photo over on DPReview this week as my farewell thread over there.

Promeneur, do you know if there is a photo size upload restriction here? I had a problem uploading some photos to another site. I think some of my images were in the 30MB size.

The max size at this time is 4MB. Actually, just under as far as my experience goes. I had one that was exactly 4MB and I got a message that said one or more of your files is over 4MB. So, I reduced it to just under the limit and the photos uploaded fine. The avitar has a limit of 1.5MB, but no matter how small I made it when I tried to update my avatar nothing would take. I tried this on April 3rd as I don't like how the photo I uploaded was automatically cropped for 1:1 aspect ratio.

I hope that eventually that uploaded files will auto re-size, so I don't have to do this each time I would like to share a photo. I think these guys are working really hard, so I don't want it to be taken as I'm complaining. Not at all! They have done a great job in such a short time!

I completely understand that this site is just getting up and running and they may not have enough servers to handle the larger sizes. But 4MB is certainly way to small and I agree with you about auto re-sizing becoming available in the future. After all, this is a photography website where photographs should be seen and viewed in their full glory.

Also, and just random, even though I have my preferences set to Notify me for any responses, I'm not sure I see it anywhere.

I often wonder about this… There’s no doubt that vastly more photos of everyday life are being taken than ever before - but are they likely to survive a hundred years into the future? Most are on some ‘instant’ sharing app with a possibly limited lifespan before the next one takes over, cloud storage is only as good as the company which provides it and the whims of the owners, file formats change over time etc. It’s quite possible that the vast majority of these images will vanish or become unreadable and then we have the paradox of an age when photography has never been so popular but permanence is not available.

It's never been eaiser to print your images, is that not "permanent"?

Yes - it is. But I’m led to believe that few people own a printer, though there are online and in-shop ways of printing, most people don’t seem to use them, relying instead on various kinds of ephemeral web storage.

I figure the photos I take will probably last for one more generation and then that will be it. I have about 15K photos on my pc, on two external hard drives, a cloud account, and on a private server. None of that really matters though. The only thing that will matter is what my adult children decide to do with them and the subsequent generations. Now, that's way too many photos, so what I have done is set up "Best of" folders within folders. I figure in the final years when I'm less active I will do a "Swedish Death Cleaning" and be deleting a tremendous amount of what I have only keeping what I consider the "best". It will be less painful for the family and less likely that they will just hit delete. Anyway, little lasts forever. I will have a talk with my family as to what I hope happens with my "best" photos!

Now, I've actually done the opposite. I have taken old family photos and scanned them and shared them with other family members. When only one print copy exists, it is more at risk of being lost or tossed. In the end it comes down to whether or not there is an interest in keeping all these old photos and slides.

There is currently an exhibition here in NYC at the MET, "Bernice Abbott's New York Album, 1929" It's actually the pages of an actual photo album and the photos are tiny!

Something like this could occur again in 100 years, but the photos for the exhibition would probably come from the New York Times archives not a 21st century hobbyist. So, we are lucky to be alive in much more affluent times where just about anyone can pick up a camera. Cell phones do not count for me! :-(

I'd say it truly depends on the kind of everyday life photography. There's a huge difference between taking pictures in order to share them on social media, and taking pictures out of a true feeling to capture the moment for any reason. I'd think that once an everyday photo transcends its genre to become art, the photographer would at least print it out!

It’s the old saying…you don’t have a photograph until you have a print.

I don't disagree agree with anything you said, but my point was only that if you really want to preserve your images, then it is very easy to have them printed and bound in a book.

And this is really a great option for "permanence".
