Are there any AF Z mount lenses in the "muffin" size, i.e. like the 28/f2.8 or 40/f2 but between these two in focal length? The only lens I've found is the TTArtisan 32/F2.8 with the rather awkward hood, consequential huge lens cap, and apparently flare and focus problems at least as reported by one reviewer I found.

Really I'd like something in the 32-35mm range, must have AF, but shorter than the Nikon 35/f1.8 or Viltrox 35/1.8. F2 would be great, F2.8 fine too - but it's lens length I'm trying to avoid more than diameter.

Something like the old Nikon AF-D 35mm/F2 that I was fond of for its size, if not its optical quality. However, I'm not willing to consider anything that needs the FTZ as that'll add far too much to the length and I already have the AF-S 28mm/1.8 and FTZ2 anyway.

Not really an AF lens right now by any manufacturer that fits your requirements. There are plenty of manual focus options.
So the Nikon 40mm is 1.8 inches. The Viltrox 35mm is 3.5 inches, and the Nikon 35mm is 3.4 inches.
You didn't specify a FF or APS-C lens, but there is the new Sigma 30mm 1.4 APS-C lens that is 2.9". That's about as short as you're going to get right now.

If you're willing to adapt then there are some other options, e.g., the Sony/Zeiss 35mm f/2.8. Nice little lens.

I have the TTArtisan lens and have not noticed any focusing issues or flare, although I have not pointed it toward the sun while taking photos with it.

The hood, as you probably know, is not removable (and it's square-like) but in no way is it big and it is retractable. I am pretty sure it's smaller than the Nikon Z 40mm lens.

It's smaller in diameter and a fair bit smaller in volume, but a little longer than the 40mm

You're right, I should have specified, I'm looking for FF which seems to make the options in this space very thin on the ground.

@rangel28 how is it wide open? I assume the lens cap isn't the normal think click in type of cap but rather a slip on cup/boot type thing that's going to be quite thick isn't it? I get that the hood is small compared to many hoods, but it seems like a hassle better avoided. I would love to get your thoughts on flare if you get the chance to test it with the sun just out of frame.

Here is the lens with the "cap" off. It just fits snugly over the top. I will grab some photos later into the sun and wide open. From what I remember, it wasn't bad wide open but I didn't pixel peep.

Here are some photos taken today with the lens. The first, of the dog, was taken wide open at f2.8. The other two were taken pointed toward the sun (which was to the left at around the 10 o'clock position). The first four did not have flare but the fifth did. These are straight from the camera with just the files made smaller.

@rangel28 - thanks for the pictures, I appreciate your effort. I read that VR is not supported with this lens, which seems odd as that's a feature inside the camera (as opposed to optical VR which you get only in much longer lenses) and I don't understand how a lens could prevent the electronic VR operating inside the camera, can you comment?

So I am using this lens on the Z6, and VR is enabled and appears to work. I can try turning it on and off to see if there is any difference but with a 32mm lens it may be hard to see.
