Images from Arthur William Hobart, who leant out of a biplane to produce pictures of England in the interwar period, have been digitised and released. The page links to the Historic England site, where there are a number of aerial views that can be enlarged.

My favourite is that of the Crystal Palace, which had originally been erected in Hyde Park for the Great International Exhibition of 1851, and subsequently rebuilt in Sydenham, South London. It was destroyed by fire in 1936. There are many photos of it on Wikipedia. The recent invention of interchangeable nuts and bolts enabled the original building to be assembled in five months.

I am amazed at the clarity of these photos, taken while leaning out of a biplane with a heavy camera!
