Kestrels are so tiny. They're also wary of people...at least in my neck of the woods. It's tough to get a photo op where one fills the frame.
At least they keep a reliable schedule. Late in the day when the wind is coming from the west or southwest, there's a place where at least one kestrel likes to hunt during the last hour or so before sunset. I set up in the shade of a juniper tree and wait. On her usual rounds, the bird hovers above a tree about 50 feet from where I'm sitting. It's near enough for a photo but not so near as to fill the frame. I figure, if I keep fishing this spot, she will eventually stray from the usual pattern and drift forward near enough to make for a really lovely shot.
This isn't that but it's worth sharing. The angle of the bird's head makes the negative space work for me.
