Kestrels are so tiny. They're also wary of people...at least in my neck of the woods. It's tough to get a photo op where one fills the frame.

At least they keep a reliable schedule. Late in the day when the wind is coming from the west or southwest, there's a place where at least one kestrel likes to hunt during the last hour or so before sunset. I set up in the shade of a juniper tree and wait. On her usual rounds, the bird hovers above a tree about 50 feet from where I'm sitting. It's near enough for a photo but not so near as to fill the frame. I figure, if I keep fishing this spot, she will eventually stray from the usual pattern and drift forward near enough to make for a really lovely shot.

This isn't that but it's worth sharing. The angle of the bird's head makes the negative space work for me.

Far too many good shots getting buried down in here, so lets try and rectify that.

We don't have them Bill and sure wish we did. I didn't realise they were that small, so that's good to know. Beautiful markings and colours, great to see that tail out slowing it down. Beautiful shot. Always nice to get them closer Bill, but not always possible. We take what we can get sometimes.
