R8 is entry level, low build quality, small battery, overheats in HQ modes, no RAW video.
GH5S is semi-professional, high build quality, bigger battery, no overheating issues, 4k RAW video.
R8 is nice for beginners, at least for those who don't mind to getting locked into the closed RF mount. Me, I wouldn't buy it, for the reasons see farther above.
I really still like my GH5S, although in March last year I bought a GH6.

The GH5S does all what I need for video. After I bought it I sold my GH5 (Mark I), as I have more than enough M43 cameras for stills.
The GH6 has much better video features than the GH5S, except for two things that are show stoppers for me:
- Multi-aspect sensor only on GH5S. I like extreme wide angle video. Got my Laowa 6/2.0 just the other day.
- No battery grip available for GH6, and I don't use camera cages.
Thus I still use GH5S for video.
Maybe I'll change my mind during this year's events, as I'd really prefer CFexpress over SDcard. Time will tell. -
I’ve watched several youtube videos on GH5S autofocus performance and it seems that with the latest firmware updates is actually quite good. Would appreciate your thoughts on how the CAF performance compares with the GH6 for:
- Static talking head or standing person video
- Slow moving subject video (e.g. a person walking)
- Faster moving subject video.
One can get a lightly used GH5S these days for US$900 - $1000 and thinking that may be a very good deal.
