I want to move on from DPR and all its frustrations towards the end. But this comment rings very true for me. I got several bans, usually reversed by the Admins, thanks to certain individuals who were very good with the complaint button. Usually for really weird stuff. On a certain forum I was feted as one of the faithful, until I started to question if another format might be more useful and made a couple of posts comparing the two systems I was using. I was still undecided to go one way or other, or use two systems in parallel. Honest inquiring got a lot of abusive replies, but it was I who got the rap. I still used that forum for good reason after I moved on, but I knew any reply to the "Fool Frame" type posts would get me a ban.

When they changed the Forum rules, a lot of interesting people seemed to disappear, or became very muted in their comments.

what annoyed me was after he ban me he went and changed the title of my thread !!! my thread was to be a bit of a snacky thread to see if Olympus users would get defensive like they did every time digital FF was discussed, then i posted a link of the last thread Black and White images and they were mostly shot with FF and MF film cameras, talk about a bunch of hypocrites.

So you deliberately post FF on a crop board specifically to wind up the members?
IMO That deserves a ban as it's trolling. Your sort of snarky thread is what I'd heard about on many other forums from users who said they wouldn't go to DPR because of the format sniping. It gains nothing & drives away photographers, please don't do it here!
I personally use both crop (x2, x1.7, x1.5 mainly) & FF I've got acceptable results from all of them. Each has it's place

There are two sides to every argument. 'Winding-up' is something that is a part of general human discourse. It's part of what makes conversation interesting. My wife and I 'wind' each other up all the time. Is that marital abuse? In the internet world 'troll' is a big scare word. Is someone having a bit of gentle fun really 'trolling'? of course, it's a judgment call, but one might also say that the people who are so invested in the size of the sensor on their camera that they over-react to this gentle humour are really the issue. And you also have to know the history. In the days Don was a mFT only man he'd deploy that same humour in the other direction, and it was a stark contrast to the vitriol that came from elsewhere, directed at people who dared to use more than one format

Which is a statement which might be interpreted as trolling (especially calling 2x 'crop') by some on that forum. The whole point was that if you used another format as well as mFT, that was an admission that mFT might not be the best for everything, so that made you 'a troll' - unless of course you were a mod and could delete posts pointing about that you owned more than $10k of FF equipment, and ban the people who posted it.

Anyone who thinks a single camera or format is best for everything has less brain cells than their camera has megapixels.
As I said above each has it's place & there are times when MFT is too big, that's why I have the Pentax Q for when most photographers use smartphones...

Winding up a single person is one thing & generally perfectly acceptable, sharing with a group specifically to knock the thing that makes them a group is not. Yes it definitely is trolling, trolls all over the internet do it because they get a bit of gentle fun for it, while ignoring the unpleasant effect it has on those they are picking on.

On DPR I tended to avoid the format specific forums as it makes very little difference to me what brand of format I use. I buy kit on the balance of price & features - this does have me wanting some Olympus bodies (for the live composite mode) but the price for the latest feature is more than I can justify.
I'd also like the latest Nikon Z or Canon R, if anyone has a spare lying around unused they want to donate.

I remember those days well Bob. I was the biggest Olympus fanboy out there epl5. em5. em52. em12 with some impressive images to go into battle with :-) even when i shot with an fz150 still got some amazing macro images. where's GB :-) we had some great debates as well about small sensor cameras vers large. but when i started shooting outdoor portraits professionally and needed to go FF, thats when the bans became imminent :-( may as well get it out the way now, would i go back ! no, i have my ultimate kit now. all good fun. half the DPR m43 members shoot FF now as well, so i dont see any problem with multiple views on any system forum.

That's a statement that would have got you into deep trouble on that forum. Here is the problem. Not everyone acts completely rationally all of the time. Quite a few people seem to be a load more invested in their equipment choice than you or I might be. It becomes an emotional thing for them. They see any comment they might interpret negatively as an attack on their favourite brand and by extension on them. It's not reasonable behaviour, but it's how people can be.

    Don.

Funny, I just asked Bob the other day about GB mate 😉 and yeah, both m4/3 and FF.

Cracking images. My FF could give a different interpretation of the subjects (it's full spectrum converted after all) but that doesn't necessarily make then better or worse.
I like to see EXIF, but I'm generally not bothered by the kit that's been used, with the exception of odd lenses etc. I'm more bothered by people trying to belittle other peoples kit.
I've not used my MFT gear since last summer's holidays (it's a bit awkward to get to I have too much photographic clutter to have everything to hand), but likewise the FF has only come out once as my old APSC DSLR has a good range of lenses in a bag I can grab easily. Hopefully I'll drag the MFT kit out over Easter I need to try out my 60mm art lens!

Live composite has indeed been around a while, but it wasn't around when the last MFT I've brought was made (actually ~10 years ago now). When I finally do buy another MFT body it will almost certainly have this feature, and give me loads of other advantages too.

The comment applies just as much to FF fanboys, who after all are using a format size originally described as miniature!
I do have several 5x4 cameras, but there's no way I'd use those for going for a walk with the family.

  • April 6, 2023, 11:56 a.m.

That wasn't quite the point. The point in the end is that it being true doesn't mean that everyone will agree, and saying that those that don't agree have 'less brain cells than their camera has megapixels' could be construed as somewhat insulting, don't you think?

  • April 6, 2023, 12:08 p.m.

Yes, Don does take some good photos, apart from motor sport that is - he hasn't quite cracked that ;-)

Most "miniature format" "fanboys" do not care about the quarter miniature format but they are constantly harassed by its fanboys.

And…. so here we are again. Took a whole 8 or 10 days. I did enjoy the interim period, though.

Same here! I think this kind of language should not be tolerated on public forum. This hole thread has nothing to do with photography.

Sorry Gary. Did anything I said offend you? If so, unintentional, and I'll gladly amend if required.

I remember getting banned from an astronomy forum for something or other. The forum owner was renowned as a 'banner' so I figured there might be a bunch of people who I could bond with. My idea was to create a t-shirt which became rather popular. I even managed to get the owner of the forum to wear one at an astronomy event in New York state and appear on video though I suspect his smile wasn't genuine :)

I offered to sell them on his forum and donate 50% of the profit to the site to keep it running but he declined.
