I reread my post. I should have said 'Nobody acts completely rationally all the time' rather than 'Not everyone...' and made it more clear that when I said 'it's how people can be' that 'people' meant all people. We're all a bit DPReview damaged, we just have to be a bit more thoughtful about what we say.

Having reread my post several times I agree it would be insulting if it referred to anyone, but surely it doesn't.
Photography often requires balancing conflicting requirements, this goes with our choice of hardware as well as which aperture/shutter speed we're using.I'm pretty sure my own hardware isn't 'the best' at any form of photography, let alone all of them. Any particular system I have generally did have a reasonable price/performance ratio when I got it. Nowadays the performance targets have raised & I've got too much for my overall collection to be able to claim even that. Some of my kit will do things the typical 'latest system' can't, but the average photographer probably isn't interested in those things.

It would have been very insulting if it had been directed at someone in particular, and the context of it meant that it could be seen as being directed at a specific group of people. So people can certainly feel offended by it.
I don't think for a moment that you set out to be offensive, but words can be taken in ways you didn't intend. Best I think to steer clear of saying things that might be insulting in case people do think that they're directed at them.
I'm speaking as someone who gets this wrong too often myself, so I have every sympathy. It would be good too if people didn't jump to feeling offended, and just decided that they weren't the target of any comment. -
Agree about Tom Caldwell, never found him abusive, just helpful.

Some of our best photography writers have permanent bans, so you are in good company. Mike Johnston of The Online Photographer was banned a long time ago for getting too testy in an argument.

what is quite funny Bob i had a major computer crash 2 weeks ago, I bought a new computer and have been going through some very old images and came across
some images i shot of some racing boats, shot with a pentax k10 (samsung branded) and a 75 300 lens, the AF absolutely smashed my M43 gear including the em12 for action auto focus. my sony gear has been faultless in this regard.

I know a guy that's been photographing motorsport for more than 50 years. Started off with a MF Nikon and a motor drive that did 3 FPS. Ate through a cassette in 12 s.

The pedant in me must point out that most people have roughly the same number of brain cells, so the insult should be that those people obviously did not know how to properly use their allotment of brain cells, but ... Why resort to insult in the first place, even if not directed at a specific person?
Lots of really smart people say and do foolish things from time to time. Actually, we all do.
Linus Pauling arguably knew how to use all his allotted brain cells to their fullest extent, yet was completely off the wall about vitamin C.
Stick to saying you disagree with the opinion without resorting to denigrating the person (or non specific group) that holds that opinion and things will be a lot less fractious.
