    Sometimes folk want to discuss a comparison about a feature or whatever between brand A and brand B. If it ends up on a brand specific forum things can get "tribal" and turn into a bloodbath. Quickly.

    Yet these conversations are often very important and deserve debate. At least here these debates now happen, they would be censored and/or closed at the old place. This is massive progress.

    What's the answer?

    1. Post them on "Camera, Lens and System Buying Advice", which strikes me as being a bit beginner oriented?
    2. Have a new section about more advanced nuances between brand features (caveat, leave brand tribalism at the door if you enter).

    Or,

    1. Leave it as it is. (Bring popcorn).

    Thoughts?

    Would this be what Open Talk about?

    Possibly. That's why I'm asking :)

    Maybe a new sub-category on "Brand Comparisons".

    The rest of us can then stand well back if we do not wish to partake.

    Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking. It opens legitimate debate away from brand specific forums. Skip if you wish etc.

    Yes, these discussions would be interesting, but I have some suggestions if I may;
    1. Avoid phrase like "wipes the floor", "that much better it's not even funny" and similar.
    2. If one claims something, please provide evidence to support your claim.
    3. Refrain from personal attacks, name calling and product bashing.

    You can skip it wherever it is, but I like an idea to have a special place for it so people would know where to go if they are looking for comparison.

    That's all good, if folks on the other side of the argument don't type indefensible made up facts to "prove" their spurious counter arguments on a basis and motivation of brand defence.

    You see the problem here, right?

    I don't think it matters where it is, so Open Talk is as good a place as any (unless someone can give me a good reason otherwise).

    I think comparisons HAVE to be polite and to the point, or they will be treated with scorn and derision - and it will quickly go off the rails.
    Provide proof? It depends what you are comparing.

    Human nature dictates that facts require proof if the brand defensive person does not accept a fact. Then when further proof is provided they call it lies. It's the nature of the internet and can be both a traffic driver and also a thing that puts other folk off.

    @Sagittarius

    I have hard time with 1. Also "night and day", being smoked, trashed and such. It would turn into censoring or self censoring fast, and we established that it is not a good way either. Given the civil discussion, I don´t see any further step where it "could end" if allowed.
    Camera A feature quality trashes Camera B feature quality, and I do not see how it is unacceptably offensive, if we know that both cameras have their place, fair use, user base and reasoning behind these.

    Otherwise, especially being at that situation myself, I cannot welcome enough such discussion.
    I already had some in private about processing/developing software, because I did not want to cause any war. So I hope we could discuss it in the open talk too.

    100%. So infantile and really lowers the credibility of the person using those clickbait phrases.

    We can disagree on the consensus on these expressions being appropriate or not, but especially when supported with examples or images, I can't see how it could harm persons credibility, if the statement is subjectively true/adequate for majority. Either the statement is true, or it is not. Delivery is seldom the point.

    Zero percent in my opinion- keep censorship out and allow freedom of expression. People are old enough here to make their own mind up about certain phrases. Keep the thought police out of these forums please.

    The big problem is that nobody likes seeing the gear they bought and like, compared unfavourably with some other brand.

    In a way, I do. It shows me challenge, advancement and such. Even envy can be good positive moving, inspirational and motivational force. Being smug about ones gear being at the top is not healthy, so some challenge spices the life. It either pushes me to do better and bypass the disadvantage of my gear, and if not possible, oh well, buying better to move forward. The novelty itself is part of the hobby.

    I think I am going to post very brand-wars provoking, but very sincere thread about my replacement very soon. 😉
