The brands or formats that need defending are the liveliest forum sections. It's a self defence mechanism. M43 for format wars and Nikon Z for AF wars are prime examples.

Those that feel comfortable with their brand or format have no need to get lively. They have nothing to defend.

It really is as simple as that

That silo-busting characteristic is my favorite thing about this place. I’m definitely one of those now reading more broadly than the mostly-siloed way I participated at dpreview.

Interesting take. Probably some truth to it. Though, as a prior Canon 1DS Mark II shooter & current Nikon Z7 shooter, I’ve never wanted to complain about the Z7’s AF or engage in “AF wars”. Why? Because I don’t try to turns screws with a hammer (ie, use tools for things they aren’t good at). I use my Z7’s mostly for landscape (for which they are a terrific tool) & some slow moving things (for which they are a good tool). But they definitely aren’t the best for, say, BIF or sports (which is not to say one can’t use them at all in those spaces). Z9’s & various cameras from Canon & Sony are definitely better in that area. Seems to me we should dispassionately eval tools & use them for what they’re good at, and leave it at that.

I agree but I have to admit, before the Z9 was launched, it got pretty bad in the Z forums. I can see why people got defensive.

When I got into photography back in the 70's, "MF" referred to "Medium Format" which was typically 120 or 220 roll film. Back in those days, "full format" was the realm of sheet film cameras.

My dad, a Rolleiflex shooter, used to complain about 35mm cameras producing "negatives the size of postage stamps".
