Canon 5 DS relatively new user

I'm interested in seeing posts, photos, discussions, from other Canon 5 DS users. I've had a Canon 5 D Mark II for years and have many photos online at my Flickr page, see camera albums, under Sandy Fleischmann. I bought a used Canon 5 DS last summer and have mainly autumn 2022 photos of Shenandoah Park Virginia. I'm still experimenting with different lenses I have from 5DIi days. My main walk-about lens is a pancake 40mm but I have various zooms and longer primes too, like 100mm and 135mm.

Can thread location be changed? I have no idea how this ended up in 'migration'. It was supposed to be in a Canon forum! Such as Canon FF.

I've had a 5Ds for almost 2 years not. Picked when up when Canon was doing the firesale clearance and bought a refurb from Canon. It's a lovely camera, and is currently my only DSLR. I also had a 5DIV paired with it, but then got a R6II and one of the DSLRs had to go to help fund the purchase. I chose to keep the 5Ds. The 5DIV was absolutely the better camera in every way except resolution, but since the R6II is now my "do everything" body, I kept the 5Ds just for that amazing sensor. It's still a pleasure to shoot with.

As I'm sure you're aware, the limited dynamic range was the main weakness all the reviews pointed to when the camera came out 8 years ago. And yes, it is a noisy sensor that will get ugly in a hurry with extreme editing. I've found that DxO RAW processing software does an amazing job with noise reduction and cleaning up the shadows on this camera. I was an Adobe RAW user for years, but for this particular camera the difference was shocking. Using DxO on this camera felt like a sensor upgrade. The camera is still a noisy beast, but whatever secret sauce DxO uses, it works fantastic.

I bought it for the resolution. I'm a seeker of clear detail in landscapes, details of branches, twigs, foliage, grass, LOL. The dynamic range has not seemed to be much of a problem for me. I process in Canon's DPP software. Here's a shot from Skyline Drive in Virginia last autumn. On Flickr you can see a large size, with full detail.

I bought a used 5DSR four years ago. I get superb results, often shifting and stitching a 17 TS-E, as well as two medium format lenses.

I use lenses from 8mm to 800mm and will try to post some images when I get a chance.

After 40 years of photography I am just attempting birds in flight. Not easy with the 5DSR. I may have to add a dreaded mirrorless in the next few years!

I bought mine back during the Canon fire sale too. I was looking to upgrade my 6D and the 5D4 was $1,000 more expensive. The 5D4 is a better camera in all respects, and possibly the ultimate Canon DSLR, except in sheer resolution. As for the extra noise of the 55DRSR, well, I’ve found that it helps to properly expose the image. Given that I bought it for landscape and frequently shoot it on a tripod proper exposure is t a concern for me. Finally, I’ve also found that in cases where the 50mpx resolution is not necessary, shooting at 30mpx M-raw will yield very noise-free images.

In short, if you want the best overall, the 5D4 is it. If you want ultimate resolution, then the 5DSR is the preferred choice.

I was an early adopter to the 5Ds and I still have the camera. I shoot primarily portraiture. Recently I got the R6MKII so I've been using that camera more. Going back to the 5Ds I love the superb IQ I've been getting from it. I hardly go beyond ISO 1600 but if I do it shouldn't be an issue since I have DXO Photo Lab Elite 6 with the Prime XD to clean up noise. If I shoot jpeg, I can run the Topaz DeNoise.

Interesting. I've never tried the M-RAW option on the 5Ds. I ust took a few pics in that mode to test, and DXO Photolab gave a message that the format is not supported. That's too bad as that's my preferred RAW processor for this camera.

The file size was not substantially smaller. I'll just stick to full RAW on this ol' beast.

Nice shot! Yes, the 5Ds will do great in shots like this for DR and resolution. It's more with very high contrast scenes and if you try to push exposure in near-black shadows that it will get noisy and 'mushy' quickly. I've never tried Canon's DPP so I can't comment there. If you ever find you have scenes with extreme contrast and are not happy with what you can massage out of the RAW file, DXO is worth a shot. They offer a free 30 day trial.

Not trying to come across as promoting software here, merely passing along what I've found works well with the 5Ds RAW files.

Interesting experiment yesterday and today with the 5DS + 135mm lens + 2x Teleconverter. Subjects basically my backyard bluebells, wood poppies and azaleas. I found the teleconverter shots were not nearly as sharp as the plain 135mm prime shots today. Plus I had some strange ISO choices (high ISO) on the camera in P mode. Generally the camera ' chose' lower ISO and more open apertures on the plain 135mm prime. Quite a divergence of results. With the 2x converter, the best shots tended to be at f/9 or f/11. Many photos on my Flickr r page, interesting to study. All shot on monopod, RAW processed in Canon DPP.
I' m seeking recommendations for a travel light weight (relatively) zoom to supplement the standard 24-105mm above 104mm. I prefer not to travel with the 70-200L on walk-abouts.
