I'm always quite keen on trying different papers on my ET-8550 and SC-P5000, and have been pondering the idea of trying some Canon papers; maybe Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss, Luster, or Pro Platinum. Is this a really bad idea? Has anyone tried it?

Yes - neither make their own papers ;-)
However, for my reviews I tend to use OEM and third party papers. So no Canon in an Epson or Epson in a Canon.
Usual reason I'm asked about this is that someone has boxes of a paper from an old printer, or acquired it somehow...
Usually no problems, you just need to make a profile.
Some older papers which worked OK in some HP and Kodak printers work really badly in Canon/Epson printers - you will know this if you touch a print and get an inky finger...
Not with those exact printers but when I switched from Canon to Epson printers I tried using my leftover Canon papers (glossy and luster) in both of them and it wasn't pretty. I get great results on both Epson printers from Epson, Red River and Hahnemuhle papers with their profiles, and there's enough variety to keep me happy. Sample packs are a good way to find out which you like best.
I was surprised to discover that HP semi-gloss paper works great with my Canon Pro 100 printer. Both color and monochrome. I had quite a bit of HP paper left-over when I got the Canon.
I wish that I had something helpful to say regarding about Epson paper. . . But after my original Photo Stylus printer (1995) I had a bad experience with my second Epson (clogging from Day One) and I never got another one. My first Epson was very reliable and produced very good prints.
You should be OK but will need to make a profile for the paper and printer.
I have used Canon's "High Resolution Paper" HR - 101N on my Epson P600 with good results. I made my own profile for the printer/paper combination.
