One must say that these companies had balls on them to release such thing for such money. In current money it is good two-three month income here. In the age of that camera, it was six month worth of income of my parents. Maybe both of them. Wicked. Now i whine about 30+Mpx $2000 camera hehe.
We have it so good these days.
Also, EOS 300D must have come very soon after this, for much more affordable price.
//2003, $900. Wow!
Don't confuse amateur and professional markets 😉

Indeed it is different. But in that time, it was quite a novelty item against all the current. It's not easy to be first. It is different now with 100Mpx monsters.
But businesses still try bravely. Reminds me of M-Force speakers with moving magnet. Quite science fiction for most.
Hi,
I bought one of these to go with my 1D. This, at the same time I had a Kodak 660c and 620x pair along with a Kodak 520c and 560c pair. And a Nikon D1H and D1X pair.
After about a year with all six, I decided that the 560c images were preferred over the 1Ds and the D1H images over the 1D. So that ended my time with having Canon EF alongside Nikon F by way of mounts. Sold them all off save for the D1H and 520c - by then locked onto a Leica microscope
I then bought brand new Kodak 760c and 720x in 2003 and stuck with those plus the D1H until 2018 when I finally bought a Df.
So the best I can say regarding the 1Ds is that it was Just OK.

Yet, between 2002 and 2006, Canon dominated the digital market head and shoulders.

It is at this time that Kodak collapsed
And we had to wait until 2007 (five years later) to see the first Nikon FF the D3
Hi,
Yep. Canon no longer wished to cooperate with Kodak. No more camera bodies. Nikon still did, but no more F5, the F80 (I think that's what it was anyway). And Kodak felt the pressure of Full Frame and so opted for a 3rd party CMOS sensor v their own 10 MP APS-H CCD (as used in the Leica DMR).
And then that 3rd party sensor had issues. Which wound up corrected. And then Sigma supplied a Canon body. But, sadly, all that came too late to save Kodak. The End, My Friend.
I'm not saying the 1Ds was poor. It wasn't. It was pretty good. I just happened to like the 6 MP APS-H images from the Kodak 560c better. I had originally picked up the 560c to use on the Leica scope in place of the 520c. Then decided that was overkill. So I bought a Canon lens or three. Then bought the 1D as it was superior at the race track. So, when the 1Ds came out, I just had to jump on the full frame bandwagon. ;)
After living with it for a while, I simply decided that I'd stick with smaller than full frame and Kodak was having that fire sale on the Nikon F5 based units. Clearing out the warehouse for room for the 14n, I suppose.
