Agreed - avatars do not identify thread author so easily (excluding myself :)).
Another related suggestion (thus not in separate topic) - in general threads list, display forum name also. Currently it is seen on coloured tags - for me this looks like colorful noise.
IMO this is one thing what rival forum got right, see attachment.
