    Many successful photographers are excellent business people first, but as photographers they can be mediocre at best. I know several friends [ for over forty five years] that are exactly like this with their own photography business. Times are changing though, and not for the better...

    I think he misinterpreted that you charge money to take photos of your siblings, or, alternatively, he thought, as a fellow serial killer, that you should shoot siblings for the joy of it, rather than as a gun-for-hire. 😁

    I gave up shooting my siblings when there were none left. Now I just sit in jail thinking about it.

    OK using a tripod can have upsides as well. I was in Bussetto ( of Giuseppe Verdi fame), where I came across a wonderful Lombard Gothic abbey. A gardener saw me with my tripod doing an external shot of the façade. Kindly he opened up the cloisters , which are usually off limits, and let me take some shots with my tripod mounted gear.

    On the same afternoon I was shooting another building and was struggling to get an angle without a car that was parked in front of the building. A guy appeared and moved his car out of the way.

    A tripod positive afternoon!

    @NCV

    In my opinion MOST people believe that you can “make money” with photography. And, you certainly can. I can, you can. “Money=revenue.” Not “money=profit”. Hobbyists get paid for their work all the time but, often the payment is not enough for butter or bread let alone butter and bread.

    The question that you didn’t ask is “do people believe that you can make a living as a photographer?” The answer again is “yes” because they see photo credits, adverts, wedding photogs, fine artist photographers, product photographers, etc all the time. What they don’t understand is how tough of a hustle it is to stay solvent.

    I am sure there are still sectors of photography where a good living can be made, although oversupply of hopefuls must be a serous question.

    My post was a sarcastic jibe at those who see sombody using a tripod, and immediately think sombody is going to get rich, selling pictures of their place or monument.
