In my hometown, the old part of the city has many old houses. Most of them are not in good condition. They are listed buildings, and their restoration is expensive and difficult—but this is not the subject of this post.
The doors of these houses show subtle details that tell a lot about the almost forgotten story of how the Ottoman Empire was multicultural. The Latin numbers indicate the construction date in the Gregorian calendar, used when the owner of the house was non-Muslim. The Arabic letters indicate the construction date in the Rumi calendar when the owner of the house was Muslim.
