He had a point. Once the forums close for good, EVERYONE'S account is effectively cancelled. What is the difference whether it's done right now or when everything is shut down? It was a silly request.
Does officially closing your account also result in all your contributions being deleted? If so, there might be a difference if it affects DPR's archiving exercise.
Officially closing an account removes the User ID so posts are no longer searchable and thus unattributable to the OP. If you just leave…it all remains up. If DPReview leaves the forums up but locked, some would rather have the history UN searchable for their account.
Based on what you've said, you are either unable to discern what's being discussed or you do understand and would rather it become personal instead of discuss the issue that was raised.
I'll throw my hat in the ring here and say that in my opinion the whole "Exposure is not how dark or light an image looks" thread is needlessly intimidating for beginners. It may be an interesting technical discussion, but IMHO it tends to be rather pedantic and mostly irrelevant for a beginner who's trying to figure out what to shoot and how to shoot it. And there are some other similar threads, such as the white balance thread, that kind of fall in the same category in my mind.
BTW, I was sandboxed for 4-5 months with what was supposed to be a "warning." I requested my account to be closed and everything deleted, twice. They did not do it. I wrote to Richard, to ask for my account to be deleted, instead he "unboxed" me after a short email exchange (I never had a problem with him). I tried to request deletion of my account recently, and I got a message that I have made a request already. Apparently, the system keeps the old request which was ignored. What a mess they are...
When I try to sign in to DPReview I the following:

Can someone explain? I've tried this with Chrome & FF on two different computers.
I am a member who still posts in dpreview. Its still the best forums et. al. out there, putting it down here is a waste of verbiage. If it were to resurrect (it won't as Amazon just revised their number from 9,000 being let go to 25,000) it would come back to life very quickly. Why? Just about ask any question in photography and you will come across old dpreview threads, this will continue for some time. I just had this happen to me about four days ago. I got a lock symbol on one of my Fuji cameras so being lazy I just asked in Chrome how to get rid of the lock situation and the first response was a four year old dpreview thread and the first post helped me out.
I'm a member here but I'm not thrilled with the layout, it's cheap and clunky. For example, in a thread like this what page are you on? I prefer to have the pages numbered. Where's the equipment list? When someone asked a question I would often look at their equipment list, especially lens questions when helping them out. And realize that dpreview is more than just the forums. I am in post chemotherapy recovery so I hadn't used much of my gear. I had some questions about my Sigma 150 - 600 mm sport OS lens. I went into the lens section of Sigma to make sure I searched the right lens. I'm behind in some Canon updates over the last two years, new types of lens, new cameras I'm not familiar with.
I have inhabited other forums and a gaming area. I will give the gaming area as an example. I play backgammon pretty much daily, have for years. Microsoft had what was called the gaming "zone." This was fantastic, I played many from all over the world, many tournaments daily, some incredibly excellent people played there. And microsoft closed it down. I have been at another site, its good but it isn't anything close to the old zone. In another hobby, the best forum shut down. There has been some decent quality replacements, but still not the same level. I find when excellent forums shut down, the new resurrections don't seem to be as international as the old ones and I prefer forums to have a more international base, different priorities in various countries, different emphasis, different approaches.
I do hope the UI is improved here. And I wish folks would stop being so judgemental because a person isn't doing what you are doing. I signed up with dpreview in 2004 I believe under my rsn48 signature. And I will continue to help out there while it is still open. Then I will come here and help out where I can.
Same here Rich, I hope both of them survive for sure. What happened at DPR with Amazon I imagine wouldn't happen here, because more than one person is behind the controls. The issue with a one man ownership is like any other business, what happens if they end up gone tomorrow? Health, financial, etc. Is there someone to take over and it's a reason why here seems to make a lot of sense, especially when you read what Bob wants out of this.
Thxs. I looked up how to change the DNS. It looks straight forward but I don't know enough about it or if it would be a problem with my internet provider. I'm not a computer person and if things went south I'd really be in trouble. I did book mark the site and maybe I'll give it a try at some future date.
I miss DPR but am glad this site is stepping up to fill the gap. Thanks to all of you.
