DPReview Forum Very Quiet Now.

I love his signature line mentioning rudeness…and then he posts like that.

There's a lot of beginners activity in various Facebook groups as well.

So far this place has many knowledgeable people asking themselves questions that they wish beginners would come in and ask, then they answer them for themselves. Don’t know if it’s Peacocking or boredom. Perhaps both.

The logic has been provided that this way the answers will already be there if beginners do trickle in. But then I ask myself, what’s the motivation to engage and create an account if the reason I came is already covered? Might as well just make it a blog with a big FAQ’s section.

I joined there in June of 2000 when all the various makes and models of DSLR were discussed in the Pro Talk forum. Much to the unhappiness of many of the working Pros. But they all were considered professional cameras then. And the technology was not hardly understood by most people buying them, pro or am. And here I was someone who was in R+D for things electronic. So that made me a different kind of Pro. That's where my signature came from - trying to point this out.

And there was much rudeness. Of course there was. And most of those posts are still there in the Pro Talk forum. Many other more specific forums were created, and entire threads moved. But not all. Not that I think anyone wants to go back and look.

Some mods then weren't so good either, same as now. It's difficult to find folks that are willing to spend all the time required to do that job. And so here we are now. Same old, same old. And much of it is Just Plain Silly.

Yes, it's getting quiet over there. Doesn't matter if the Powers That Be change their mind. Looks like they lost it. The main forum I'm interested in these days, the Medium Format one, seems to have collected most of the group here now. Same with the Kodak DSLR forum. As far as other sorts of digital gear goes, I think it's mostly a scattering to the four winds.

But I do see many I recognize here if they are using their same screen names. Might be others with new screen names I haven't figured out yet.

And it looks like Here is the replacement for There for me.

I can't believe DPR management does not care at all about their moderator's behavior, at the end the reputation of that place as a whole is badly hurt by them.

What is wrong with this. Since you cannot delete your account yourself and admins are to busy or whatever, he offered you help. He cannot delete you account but banning you effectively does the same thing.

Why not just tell the guy politely that there is no need to delete his account as in a few days time(?) all the accounts will be deleted anyway.

If this reply is intended for me then I think you are a bit confused. If you re-read my post you'll see it wasn't me who got banned. It was a response to the OP about the other forum losing momentum.
Plus the wording of the Mod's reply is pretty terse.

Yeah, I actually kind of chuckled when I saw it. I have DMed with Smaug01 a bit and he seems a good guy. My only issue with his moderation was in Open Talk if the convo strayed from photography he would lock the thread when most other mods would not have. My post right before this one above and the only other post on the thread was me asking Lucio why he cared, the whole thing will be deleted soon enough. I have had a few back and forth convos with Lucio and while they have been polite, he has some pretty out there theories.

As Bob pointed out getting banned and closing an account are not the same thing. If banned, your posts will still show up with your screen name. If the account is closed it changes to (unknown member).

Closing an account was an option additionally offered on the download request page. That will probably take weeks. However, if you would want to delete your traces, it might be an option. A last minute sale to a party you don’t like (doesn’t even have to be TikTok) is not unthinkable

Windows Talk is beyond quiet. :-)

I registered early here, anticipating others would move quickly as well, but I'm still seeing more traffic in DPReview's PC Talk than our version. It'll be interesting to see if inquiries here pick up once DPReview shuts down...whenever that might be.

I think you are on the money there with Peacocking.

What does it matter, they are not causing anyone any harm.
Calling them out because it bugs you is futile as you are not in control of the actions of other people.

Or maybe you are just sending out signals to see who will join you.

If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all.

I disagree. I think a number of people have been eager to get a community started here and have been sharing information. Unfortunately, there was one long thread in which an instigator did his best to confuse a number of issues to which others repeatedly posted correct information. That went on much too long. Until he was called out for trolling.

There have been a number of well-intended threads regarding information that would be useful for beginners. To characterize those discussions as members "peacocking" is way off base. A thread was labeled by the OP as "Beginners Questions." But its theme was information for beginners. Participants weren't "asking themselves questions that they wish beginners would come in and ask."

It seems pretty disingenuous to fault others for doing exactly what a forum site like this should do.

That's a great way to preemptively provide accurate and helpful information to commonly asked questions from beginners and maybe to even those who should know better.

It's a bit like a FAQ forum.

I feel like that's a really good idea. This way it should be possible to have in-depth/detail/meta discussions, without overwhelming beginners.
