Continuing the image editing thread, 27th issue!

About This Image: I have never been more confounded by an image. It was taken in Newfoundland in the wilderness section of the Avalon peninsula, near the village of Witless Bay. A fierce storm blew in from the sea, making the day dark as night. We pulled off the road on a gravel pullout and waited it out in the car. As the sky brightened afterwards, we noticed a path over a slight ridge, explored it, and found this scene. Dozens of little boats, carefully built, each about 3-4 ft tall, bobbing in the river. A sign noting the builder. I thought that with the threatening but colorful sky and all those boats and reflections I'd be able to make something interesting of it with editing and cropping. But I never could. Maybe you can...JPG below, original raw file (ORF) in dropbox here www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/3cwv0i9thgatnndm381lp/last-week.orf?rlkey=5jgl9wops8yg63m15dfhgertu&dl=0
    General rules:

    • A previous round winner presents a busy or just not so interesting image, having at least some potential for different crops or visions.
    • Anyone (except author of original image) can edit the presented image, up to three distinct edits in separate posts are permitted.
    • All edits must be based on original image, not on another people's edits (of course borrowing ideas would not be a problem).
    • Short explanations about your editing intentions and/or techniques are encouraged, but not required.

Once the deadline for images has been reached, no new image versions will be accepted. Questions and (polite) discussions of techniques are welcome, so that we can learn from one another how certain edits were achieved.
The edited version gathering most likes wins and its author will start next round, unless they would prefer to pass the torch to someone else.
On the closing day for voting, if there is a draw in the number of likes for two or more edits, then the person that posted the original image will decide the winner from the the photos receiving the most votes.

    Editing rules:

    • All "normal" adjustments (brightness, colours, curves etc) are permitted (both local and global ones).
    • All geometric adjustments (perspective, cropping etc) are permitted.
    • Artistic effects (brushes, textures etc) are allowed.
    • No additions or replacements may be made to the main subject matter of the image; non-essential objects may be removed, and parts of the original image can be "moved" to a different position in the image. Sky replacements are OK unless the sky is the main subject..
    • Generative AI must not be used.

    Timing:
Get your images posted by May 7. As always, you can vote during the entire contest plus one day after the image submission deadline. I'll post reminders.

So, my first try at this was twofold:

First, I selected the sky and enhanced the contrast and other stuff. There's a lot of detail and colour in there. I wanted it looking broody.
Second, I inverted the selection and upped the contrast and clarity.

Lastly, I got rid of that sign on the left.

    So, I'm left with this:

Mi second try was to take the image above and just have one or two boats in there with the lighthouse as the focal point.

I felt a choice needed to be made between the clouds/storm and the boats. I chose to turn the boat detail into a panorama.

    Dawn rescue

At the break of dawn, the pirates crept over the ridge like shadows, eyes locked on the ships nestled in the hidden bay below. Their comrade was imprisoned aboard the steamboat—and time was slipping away. The sky churned with the promise of a raging storm. They had to strike fast…

Great light, great color, great mood. Other than balancing the dynamics somewhat, tweaking the geometry slightly, and cropping slightly, I don't think this one needs much help. Nice shot...

And the winner is Fireplace! With a rendition that kept the original subjects with minimal cropping, leveled out the tonalities, and delicately edited to bring out the variegated colors in the scene.

Thanks to all who participated. More comments later, but for now, the baton is passed to Fireplace for our new challenge.

Many thanks to Minniev and the voters!
It seems all I needed to do was to add some fanciful text, to tell the story as it “really was”, and then you can win the votes 😉
    ...just like in politics ;-)

I'll start a new challenge tomorrow
