I was editing a picture in Lightroom Classic (latest edition) and got it how I liked. Exported it to a JPG and it's come out much darker than I expected. This is not good. I've checked the export parameters and I can't see anything there to cause that. Anyone have any clues where I can start looking?

Here's a screenshot of the JPG image next to the image in LR. Any clues gratefully received.

Is it darker only in browser or in windows viewers too?

Possibly wrong or no gamma correction (linear) during export.

In the GIMP, that occurs if you export a JPEG edited in Linear Mode as a PNG ... voila:

    comp lin export.jpg

As to Adobe, I have no idea what could cause that, sorry.

Add to that: was the JPEG saved with an embedded ICC profile or not?

I have no idea if that is true - it was exported as a JPG though.

    How do I find out?

Quick google shows some threads, where Lightroom exporting makes some images darker (like 20 images of 300 are much darker, all are processed with same profile). There was 'smart preview' mentioned in one thread - is there such option in LR and what happens, if you turn that off?

It is true: I have been using the GIMP for years.

Post the saved JPEG here and I'll check for you.

Beware that some apps that can "Save for the Web" do not all embed a profile and may not Convert an edited image to sRGB image data during export; so editing to taste in a ProPhoto workspace then saving for the Web could give unexpected results ...

That image has an embedded ICC sRGB profile of type 'mntr' so should not be aberrated on a color-managed system.

I thought so too but just wanted to be sure for the record.

I note the "latest edition" of LRC.
Is it configured (yet?) to observe the default profile in Windows (I assume you set one ) ?

Is there a clue here? That profile has Tone Response Curves, here's red (rTRC):

    Everything seems correct here.

Alan, does such darkening happen with all files or only with some? If only few files are affected, then profile problems do not seem likely.

Bear in mind that it is not Alan's image, it was downloaded from the OP of "edit my image" #17 and that image has no embedded profile. Therefore, the darkening has to do with Alan's use of LRC and particularly what input and output profiles were selected.
