This is just to start this category off. Although this is a UK based site, I am going to use the term "soccer" instead of "Association Football" or just "football". (Sorry Bob, I hope that, as a fellow Brit, you don't object.)
I have been shooting soccer matches, men's and women's, for a local club for 5 years. I shoot mainly for the players and mainly for the web, and what I like best is shooting high speed action - goals, headers, goalkeeper saves, etc - because it is challenging. I started shooting at 10 fps with mechanical shutter, then switched to 18 fps with electronic shutter and just put up with rolling shutter. I now shoot at 25 fps with an OM-1 and no rolling shutter.
Here are two examples to show why I use such high speeds.
These three shots of a header were taken at 10 fps. The ball is travelling quite slowly but no image to close to showing the ball actually in contact with the head. The second shot is the best that I can do.
The second four shots are at 25 fps and the second is perfect.
I have tried setting up two custom modes, one at 25 fps for fast action and the other at 10 fps for slower action, but changing between the two is just one more thing to worry about when I trying to concentrate on the action. So now I shoot everything at 25 fps which gives me about 1,000-1,300 shots per match, but I have learned to be ruthless in reviewing and culling afterwards. The extra time that it takes to select the images that I want to use is well worth the improvement in the quality of the high speed action images that I get..
