We are looking at revamping the look & feel of the forums. I've started a poll to see how many of you use the Threads menu item (at the top of every page) to view all new posts and how many go to single forums to view new posts.

I'll keep the poll open for a couple of weeks.

    Cheers

I never used to use the Threads menu because I was happy to open the categories in the order I wished - read all Discussions first then look at Street etc. But having just looked at it, I might use it just to quickly see what threads are new...

I do use it all the time, it's like a sort of active/new threads. So I can see directly where new replies have been posted

    Hi,

I come into the Medium Format forum, where there is rarely anything new.

After checking there,.I use the Threads radio button to see what is new everywhere else. Should that go away, I wouldn't be looking for anything elsewhere other than the Medium Format forum.

Same for me. I only ever use the Threads page, except for ehen I need to find the appropriate category for a new thread. On the threads page I can see which threads are active, and when they were last added to.

Same as David, I use only Threads view, except when starting a new thread and trying to find where it's supposed to be placed.

Same as Stan. I look at the MF forum from time to time, and the Threads view for what else is going on.

Threads here usually, it's fairly manageable on a decent size monitor.
You may wish to POLL Phone vs Monitor as well, as it's going to affect this.

I generally go to the Home Page index, have a glance down the subjects for signs of particular excitements anywhere, then click on Image Discussion, Critique and Challenges because this is where I find most activity. I look down the list to see what is getting attention and start browsing from there.
Then I look at posts in specific forums one at a time.

I have a shortcut to Threads because it is the only way I can quickly see what might interest me in active fora which I don't usually look through.

Off-topic but could not see how to change my vote in this poll because the one I picked has disappeared from my screen:

Very weird. I didn't cnage it and I hope the other mods didn't either.

    I've added a third option.

Thinking about this. How important do y'all think the title of the post is? Or do you specifically look for the genres that interest you? Looking down the Threads, I suspect that the title is very important in deciding what is looked at.
A further thought. The Threads looks to me to be something that would be used by those already very familiar with the site and with a predispostion to specific areas.
I don't think Threads would be used by those new to the site.

I disagree. Threads view IS the place where action happens, also with current (or even few times more) traffic it offers complete overview about forum. If we had more than pageful or two new posts every day, then it would be different. (I have used Home button only to check some stats.) Desktop us eonly.
Well, this is just my opinion - I'm also the one, who in every web shop switches to maximum page length (or - 100-200 items is optimal, infinite scoll is also not usable) :)

I click on "All Forums" when I'm checking on recent activity.

Yeah but Mike was referring to new users. What does the title "Threads" mean to someone who has just arrived at the site?

To that point I would suggest it was named "New Posts" or similar. Something unambiguous.
