Photography is 95% inspiration and drive (commitment), and 5% gear.
It has taken me quite some time to figure this out.

Many moons ago, I dropped close on Four Grand on a camera body, sans lens. What was I thinking at the time?
Today I’m shooting with 20 year old six, eight, and ten-megapixel cameras and having a ball.
You too can have fun for fifteen bucks and a tube of Krazy Glue. lol

Inspiration and Drive are powerful forces that reside within the human psyche.

Try telling that to a sports/nature shooter...
My 13,000 dollar lens didn't come with any krazy goo either.

I've spent about $120 this year and it's improved my nature shooting tremendously. What's the lens that should have at least come with a very nice case?

It greatly depends on what you are shooting as to whether the gear matters a little or a lot. The piano analogy is simply wrong since you can play almost anything on almost any piano (there are some exceptions with key responsiveness and rate).

Modest focal length and good light - matters little.
Extremes of focal length and/or bad light - matters a lot.

Taken to the extreme is the $10B James Web Space Telescope. If gear never mattered, it wouldn't exist. But for the types of images they wanted to capture, that's what it took.

Two hundred bucks (just over 150 quid) got me my fourth Sigma SD9 plus accessories:

Two more lenses and another flash in the bag 😀

3.4 MP, no video, raw only and no stupid scene modes.

    Retro Ted.

Modest focal length, good light, almost any camera or cell phone can take this shot.

2000mm, f/7, full-frame, 15 second exposure. Need a big lens or telescope on a tracking mount to take this shot.

It was cloudy where I was, but occasionally it would peek through as in this moment: Taken with 500mm f4 lens
