My 13,000 dollar lens didn't come with any krazy goo either.

It greatly depends on what you are shooting as to whether the gear matters a little or a lot. The piano analogy is simply wrong since you can play almost anything on almost any piano (there are some exceptions with key responsiveness and rate).
Modest focal length and good light - matters little.
Extremes of focal length and/or bad light - matters a lot.
Taken to the extreme is the $10B James Web Space Telescope. If gear never mattered, it wouldn't exist. But for the types of images they wanted to capture, that's what it took.

Modest focal length, good light, almost any camera or cell phone can take this shot.
2000mm, f/7, full-frame, 15 second exposure. Need a big lens or telescope on a tracking mount to take this shot.
