To everyone here, the quote system unless you are familiar with it, is generating lots of mishaps on this site.

    1.
If you want to post a reply without a quote just click the larger 'Reply' button at the very base of the page (not a Reply button next to a post).

That's the 'Point A' simple approach and it keeps unnecessary long quotes out of the equation.

    2.
If you do want to quote (don't click a Reply button! - yes this is radical), from an existing post select just the text you want to quote, a 'Quote' pop-up option will appear, click on it. You now have just that text in a new reply editor window (who posted it will be included).

    3.
As a powerful optional extra, you can also scroll up behind your reply window and find another section of text to quote - maybe from another poster in the same thread. Do the same, select the text, the 'Quote' pop-up will appear again, click on it. That text will be added to your reply window. Between these multiple quotes you can enter your own text, photos etc.

The above is worth doing in a linear order to avoid mishaps, i.e. select > quote, then type your text, select > quote, then type your text etc ;-)

NB in 2. the 'don't click a Reply button' is said mainly to learn the above 'select-text' method. If the other member's post is short and you want to reply to and quote it all, then yes click the Reply button next to it (it's doing the same as the above but is selecting all the text). If the post is long though, and you only need to refer to a small part of it, the above approach (selecting text) keeps the length of replies down, and more focused. Also the multi-quote method is essential to learn! Enjoy.

Thank you. Very useful. I've pinned this to the top of 'site feedback' so it doesn't get lost.

Great tips, especially the select text and clicking quote option. Also something to be aware of is I've seen a few folks add their reply/comments inside the quote - so just be aware that will become part of the quote (i.e. same text formatting) so can be fairly hard to distinguish your reply from the quoted text.

Best thing to do is to use that select+quote option, and add your responses outside/inbetween of any "quote" tag blocks.

Also happy to tell that „Reply” button on posts in next release will just open the reply interface. To quote entire message there will be separate „Quote” button next to it instead. This should much simplify the things for the folk.

That is radically new. Tried it. Worked!

And the third method works too. So great!

Yes, this is the only forum I know of where it is so easy to do that.

If one juggles with the ordering of the 'quote]' ... '/quote]' statements in the BBCode, it is possible to nest quotes when that is desirable:

    Example:

    {quote="@}First dude"]First text{quote="@Second dude"}Reply to First text{quote="@Third dude"}Reply to Reply to First text{/quote}{/quote}{/quote}

When the curly brackets are replaced by square ones, the above looks like:

In the above, the ordering is outside-to-inside. That can be changed to inside-to-outside by grouping the 'quotes' at the beginning of the line and reversing the order of the dudes, voila:

[edit]This looks like the automatic nesting that DPRevived applies to successive replies to a 'First Dude' so maybe this post is not real useful, grump [/edit]

Anyway, fire up the editor, write some quotes and click on the Preview button to see how they look .... no doubt other looks are possible ...

Highlighting & the quote popup button only seem to work on desktop. Android Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, Opera & Duck Duck Go seem to be a no go. For me.

I will check that out. Thanks for pointing it out.
