However, I made an exception for a Sandhill Crane lighted by the setting sun. My first attempt to post an image in this forum.
Uncroppted: OM1. 1/2000, f8, ISO 2500, MC20 + 300mm f4. This was intended for the Micro Four Thirds Forum. I will have to see what I did incorrectly.

While I do agree with all who say atmospheric distortions make long shots difficult I think there is the odd exceptions to the rule. And your shot definitely is proof for that! Well done! Would love to have such a "close" shot of a Crane but unfortunately our's here will hardly tolerate humans closer than 250m.
My personal limit for distance is simply where the bird becomes too small when fully enlarged to 100% on my 1200px high screen.
I'll try to post a shot of a Green Woody at 105m = 344ft to demonstrate that. Will be my first pic posted here so don't know if it will work...
Anyhow, excellent job on the Crane, and good to see you here!

So here comes the above mentioned Woody at 344ft distance: (hopefully!)
I can see the full 20mp file didn't work so I'll try with a downsampled version... O.k., that should have worked
And here's also a final crop to 1200px height

Aha, will have to work out how to make it visible large in addition to the thumbnail... some help would be greatly appreciated!

Start by clicking the upload arrow, the furthest right icon in the menu bar atop the reply window. When your photo has finished uploading, click on the embed in message icon to the left of the "X". It's the box with the dots along the left side and bottom. Hope this helps :)
