I bought this camera from 2017 used it not so much for 6 month, sit in tupperware with silica gel for 5-6 years, is this fungus or just some smudge and dust??? first is uncleaned and 3rd is cleaned with microfiber on front element. If it is fungus do i have an option to remove that? will it harm my Camera sensor? since this lens is attached from first i buy it and i dont have any other lens

Thanks for the reply Greg, I live in very humid country which is hot and rain season, in 2018 i brought this to japan in fall-winter season that what worried me the most because of condensation, the coldest is -4 and no snow. I store it in tupperware though with silica gel instead of dry box and i dont monitor my humidity, i havent buy any lens since, because i dont shoot too much and 35mm f1.4 is my next destination. if i dont strike the lens with direct lamp like in the photos the lens look very clear though and from image quality i dont feel any difference since the first i bought it

Fujinon Aspherical Lens Super EBC XF18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS
EBC is Electron Beam Coating, also known as multicoating.
    14 elements in 10 groups.
3 aspheric and 1 extra low dispersion element.

If you have never opened a lens before, find a local independent camera store to service / clean your lens.

Disassembly – Fujinon XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 OIS lens

I have three Nikon $1000+ lenses with fungus. I just live with them as it does not affect Image Quality.

You can kill / stop fungus growth with direct sunlight shone through the camera lens.
DO NOT BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN.

The magnifying glass image below is just an example of what could happen.

It is always best to acclimatize your camera gear when moving between extreme hot and cold …or… cold and hot locations.

I use a Lowepro camera bag / holdall and a DSLR backpack, …and keep them in the bag (outdoors) for one hour before shooting outdoors in winter, and keep them in the bag (indoors) for another hour after returning to my warm home.

yeah i've read somewhere that fungus will grow and spread and can damage your camera body sensor, and that put me in worries.
Thanks for the tip, ill try to find direct sunlight tommorow

As the site still works, here is a post from me on fungus

    www.dpreview.com/forums/post/65929178

Is it only on the outside or also inside?

As Greg said, expose the glass to sunlight. In addition to very careful cleaning with a microfiber cloth and demineralized water. If water does not help, you can also try or methanol p. A. or isopropanol p. A.

First, that looks like dust, so a proper cleaning by someone who knows how to disassemble the lens and perform a cleaning may be the first step. Second, if you do find fungus, then realize that sunlight will stop the growth of fungus, but not remove it...

i can only clean the outer part, and yes it looks like there are many dust inside the lens compartment, i dont have any profesional to open my lens though so this will be enough, and do alcohol(etanol) 70/90% damage the coating? is it any difference with methanol or isopropranolol?

Ethanol is also fine. It is less polar than methanol and more polar than isopropanol. All those three belong to the family of small alcohols. They are very similar, chemistry wise, means they have similar properties. They will not damage the coating.

It is much more important that the alcohol you use has no non-volatile impurities. Otherwise it will leave a trace on the glass.

    Cheers,

    Martin

Wow Sprouty good link. Thank you for sharing.

Never had fungus but good to know that it can be removed with a mixture of aqueous hydrogen peroxide and aqueous ammonia.

They don't say anything about the concentrations of those two chemicals. They are available as aqeous solutions each.

Here's a Youtube video, Cleaning camera lens fungus with Hydrogen Peroxide and Ammonia and in the comments the author says he used 3 % H2O2 in water and "5-10 %" NH3 in water. So it's rather low concentrations. Of course the ammonia smells intensely, so better do it outside.

Btw in the video it can be seen how lens fungus looks like, this may help the OP in their assessment.

    Regards,

    Martin
