It seems Alfn [and previous and later incarnations] consistently liked their own posts on the old site. I think he does not realise that on the desktop version here everyone can see who is that Lone Liker

Maybe he just thought they were really, really good posts. He couldn't believe he put them together so well. :)

The way to stop your normal bar from becoming a nazi bar is to keep the nazis out when they want to come in. The way to keep your forum nice and friendly is to keep the riff raffs out when they want to come in. If you're gonna let people in here with coded usernames, or keep up a pattern of behaving badly, soon you will find this place filled with people who don't have a problem with those things. If your civility doesn't include not letting in people who can't stop themselves from using racist/homophobic/etc language in their usernames, well we have do different views on what civility includes.

Being on the wrong side of my civility means you've espoused a view that includes harm to others. That doesn't mean you're a nazi, but I doubt you're gonna contribute much to worthy conversation if part of your ideology is harm towards selected others who just happen to not include you. If you wish to hear people who think like that, you're time is yours to spend freely.

Haven't seen a lot of incivility here, just general petty foolishness that I wouldn't tolerate if I was a mod.

The problem is, how do you know if people wanting to come in are Nazis?

The problem is, just who is 'riff-raff'?

Using racist/homophobic/etc language in their usernames is certainly contrary to our terms of service. If we thought that someone did it deliberately, the account would certainly be closed. Are there any people that you believe have done that?

The real question is not what you'd 'tolerate', but what you'd do about it. In any case, foolishness is not contrary to our terms of service,

The answer to both questions is the same - people that use their avatars and screen names as tools for harm. If you can't get across that simple bridge, then yeah, you a problem. Take it a step further - use tools to prevent new users from posting topics and other steps to weed out anyone who doesn't seriously wish to engage in an honest discussion about whatever the forum is about. Gone through that in plenty of different forums. I'm currently in line to get into a photo forum I'm probably never going to get into but I'm ready to jump through as many hurdles as it takes to get to that information. People who will not be useful to discussion won't be.

After those steps have been done, well, that's what you have mods for in case someone gets through the cracks.

I do not think anyone has violated these ideas yet here. As for what to do about it, easy. For non-hatemonger offenders, suspensions if their efforts prove harmful, wasteful, or show otherwise vindictive behavior that could be argued to enter near criminal or civil liability. If they persist, break out the ban hammer. It's one thing to have personal issues, it's another thing to make it other people's problems or use the site as a tool for acts of harassment or vendettas. Foolishness can be fun, but I see a distinction between doing python bits and raging against things unrelated to useful discussion.

Ah, yes, I think we're on the same page. That would be a clear violation of our terms of service. We have the facility to block such accounts in a way that they can't be recreated.
