Italy's Trevi Fountain is now a Paid site.

Trevi Fountain where Roman Holiday, 3 Coins In The Fountain and La Dolce Vita the Fountain was featured, is behind Grills and is a Paid Attraction now. That's a shame. There's an old song about it too, 3 Coins In The Fountain.

Yes, I saw it on our TV news. It is so horribly overcrowded, that they would have to pay me to go there now.

Yes, In my opinion, there is far too much destructive tourism today. Rome, Florence, Venice, Barcelona, are just the most obvious places in Europe that are suffering under its weight. Vienna, where I live, is often bursting at the seams with people who dont seem actually to take any real interest in the surroundings, except as the background to a selfie,

    I highlighted this here recently.

There's another example here, where tourists have "killed the goose that laid the golden eggs".

The Cinque Terre is another victim of chronic over tourism. I made the mistake of taking visitors there some years ago. It was hell. It has got even worse after Covid.

If you get off the train two stops down the line, you can have a pleasure of enjoying a Ligurian fishing village without the caos.

You are correct about the selfie routine. Several times I have been doing photography in a monument and have seen people arrive take a selfie and walk out. Five minutes seems to be the average time these days that people spend visiting a place. Or those who arrive take a selfie, and then stand ages posting to Social Media, and then walk out.

Tourism seems to be more about boasting about the places you visit on Facebook these days.
