Leica Q3

Finally, it’s real, but much of the buzz is absent because it was very thoroughly leaked beforehand. The (relatively!) modest price is a surprise, but there doesn’t really seem to be enough to persuade a Q2 owner to upgrade- but owners of the original Q might be thinking carefully…

In my case since I am primarily only interested in B&W - there is nothing the Q3 can do that my Q2M can't do better. The resolution of a B&W conversion from 61MP will be less than the native Q2M at 47 MP. The only thing that would perk my interest is if Leica released a Q3 with a different focal length down the road. An option of a 28 mm and 50 mm focal lengths would perk my interest in picking up a Q3 with a 50.

However, it is interesting to see that the price increase with fairly small. The Q2 price at release was $5500 and the Q3 four years later is listing at $5900 - about 7%. Compare that top the Fujifilm XS-20 which went up about 30% over the XS-10.

Their 28mm lens is reported to be wider in actual practice. Has that been your experience with your M? In my case I've found a focal length of 35-40mm to be my "most used" zone so this is not on my radar. I would be very interested, however, should they down the line decide to adopt additional models. But I may not be alive if I have to wait that long. 😀

I love the idea of 60mp coupled with the 28. With the crop modes, I get a quasi tri elemar,

The lens is wider than 28 mm. However, Leica designed this lens to use S/W correction. I use FastRawViewer to do the initial culling and FRV does not apply the correction and the distortion is obvious. When I import to C1, it is clear that the outer rows and columns at the edges of the image are used only for the correction and the processed image is 28 mm or close enough not to quibble.

So the optical image from the lens is a bit wider. However, after importing into C1, the resulting image is 28 mm. I expect the same is true for Lightroom. With the monochrome 47 MP sensor there is plenty of pixels for cropping to 35 to 40 and even up to 50 equivalent. However, I would like to see Leica do something like Sigma did with their DP fixed lens camera that is release three versions with same sensor but different focal lengths.

I have been to Leica Shops in Harrods and Mayfair in London, they say it has received a lot more attention than any other Leica. So I think it will sell as good as Q2. I have seen some purist think the design has been "molested" because of screen design, I believe it will bring more customers than it repels. Personally , if I had a Q2, I would not upgrade but I am seriously thinking to get Q3. Nikon Z7ii £2.5K, Sony A7RIV is £3K, Canon R5 £3.5 K.. So a high res body costs £3K ish. and a lens similar to this will cost somewhere £500-1000. When you consider these, I dont think that it is expensive and on top of that resale value of Leica cameras much better than other brands, so initial extra money is paid back when you sell it.
But I hear people's fixed lens vs ICL argument. I think all- almost all people interested in this camera has already has an ILC camera and lenses, for me this is a good addition for my existing Panasonic G9. I am happy with my ILC camera system, I need something with more resolution, low light performance for streets and indoor, dark environment shots.
