Inspired by some interesting comments from @19andrew47 and @Rich42 on flower photography (in the weekly C&C thread) and its perception as something not particularly challenging due to the already abundant beautiful features many flowers show, or at least something not in need of much artistic skill, as they’re beautiful in any situation or lighting, I wanted to create a thread where all of us get a chance to show the whole variety of possible flower shots and hopefully have some discussion on it as well.

So regardless of your approach to the subject, whether you try to replicate whole flowers as closely as possible to the original in your shots, create camera movement or post-processing experiments with them, dive into the world of extreme macro photography, create unique still life images or arrangements with them or anything else really… the choice is yours!

If you agree with my assessment, that flower photography can be as interesting, varied and (if you look beyond the quickest snapshots) challenging as any other kind of photography, please help by showing some samples and perhaps also describe your approaches and techniques a little bit, if possible.

Of course I’m also looking forward to any divergent or contrary viewpoints on the subject, but please let us know a little bit about your thoughts and reasoning.
And if you’re not into flowers at all, but like other aspects of Nature, perhaps take a look at the Forget flowers. Long live leaves! (Show your leaf/foliage shots) thread!

Photographs of flowers are often disconcertingly banal and show us the lack of effort of photographers.
Except for simplejoy flowers, who always find a way to highlight them! 👍🏻

Unable to compete with any of the foregoing but this is my favorite wildflower from our street:

herbertia lahue blooms for one day only in late March ...

Very beautiful - particularly the light on the petals, but the color contrast as well! 👍

One day only? Great you were able to capture it then.

Well I have at least a thousand myself, all different kinds of pictures of all different kinds of flowers. Here's a few.
    _8310049-Edit.jpg

I do love water lilies, especially the native ones growing wild.
    _4150017-Edit-Edit.jpg

Homely wildflowers are a special favorite.

We don't get much ice or snow but when we do I look for frozen flowers.

    _5010156-Edit.jpg

I like fiddling with monochrome for flowers sometimes, especially white flowers like magnoilas.

    P7010154-Edit-2.jpg

Sometimes you can combine flowers with a landscape but may have to do focus stacking like this lupine from Grand Manan.

    _9041247-Edit.jpg

Sometimes I paint them with mixer brushes. That is fun and a bit more personalized than using a filter. Also a lot more work.

My house with the lantana in bloom. It gets a little out of control by the end of summer.

@minniev That frozen rose, or looks like a rose to me, is very nice and also a strange combination in way 👍

It is a camellia which blooms in winter here, and if we get a rare late snow or ice storm, they freeze in place, very pretty till they thaw, then they fall off.

Indeed - always good to have a different perspective! Looks great. Effective use of color and light here.

Thanks! This is sorrel, isn't it? So as far as I know it is a flower/flowering plant. Reminds me of my childhood, loved to eat it.

Many thanks - this looks excellent! Very effective capture of this beautiful flower. 👍 Incredible that it's at f/2.5 as well...

WOW - those are some really outstandingly beautiful flower shots! Thank you so much for showing them.

They work so well in illustrating what I tried to describe at the start of this thread: an incredible variety as well as a unique an personal (your) view at those flowers. Just wonderful!
