Let's take this oportunity to stop posting images in camera brand forums

Why is the brand of camera that produced the image you post more important than the image that you post? I’m genuinely asking.

If you owned a Sony ABC and a Canon DEF, and shoot an incredible image of a cityscape with one and a portrait of a human with another, you feel it important to post each image in a brand specific forum? I am curious as to why that is and, if you accidentally cross-posted those fully-finished images (without the metadata) do you think anyone would notice and call you out for the mistake?

Sorry but can't see it would not be a good idea for members to post real life samples from the gear concerned.

It is always true that a picture is more valuable than a thousand words. When certain camera is marketed special good for low light shooting, but a noisy picture at ISO800 could make it a joke. Alternatively for certain cameras which are generally expected to be bad low lighting performer but a clean SOOC JPG It is always true that a picture is more valuable than a thousand words. Also the color sicence, the focusing ability, the sharpness of a lens, the resolution power...

For all those situation, post an image (with proper disclosure on what post processing been done) could be the best to show how capable a piece of gear could be.

Is it the aim of any gear discussion forum?

When neccessary, it is always better to post a sample IMHO when certain camera, feature etc is concerned.

Because if I'm in a Sony forum I want to know what lenses are like on the camera I'm using. I can't exactly mount a Sony lens on the Canon and I can't mount a Canon lens on a Sony. I mean that is so basic really. So I want to see what works and what doesn't. Heck it doesn't even have to be a good shot for it to work. It's not some sort of... eh eh, fine art shot. That makes some people sound kind of snobby in my book.

What kid is walking around with an 800 F/5.6 or a 600 F/4. What the heck has a kid got to do with what I want to see that works for me. They can't even lift the thing half the time for a start. Maybe for what you take, but certainly not for what a lot of others take. We are not all walking around with a 24mm taking yep, eh eh fine art.

So besides what you want, I'll carry on looking at the shots in the forums from the gear that I want thanks. Gees.

A better idea might be to post photos in a general critique forum if you want it looked at as an image in its own right and post according to camera brand if that is what you intend demonstrating.
ie., we need some effective critique orientated forums as well as gear forums.

Ah yes. A telling other members what they should do thread! The first of many. I like sharing my pics and seeing what others are doing. In fact, the more images the better! DPreview is gone. Let's free ourselves from the shackles of shoulds.

If looking at the Pentax forum, we had a vivid forum at dpreview, where a lot of photos were shared. What else should we do - if the brand delivers a new body every three years and maybe one or two new lenses a year? Our forum activity was not about technical discussion as dominating theme, but about using our cameras and sharing the fun we have with them ...

I always found the most image focused brand forums the most fun to be in. I always look for image posts first, then go back and read one or two non-image posts. That's why it was always nice to drop in on the Leica forum, even though I've never owned one. Tons of images, much less gear talk.

I think you will find most folk will disagree with you ...as on DPR posts with photos in constantly got more likes in a thread than posts without photos

I actually like images posted in the camera brand forum as I can relate it more closely to information about gear operation and settings. But, I also look at the categories (primarily nature & wildlife and landscape), particularly if exif information is included.

So that’s sorted then - in the way that many of us had been arguing for!

I mean… or we could let members decide where they want to post.

I think that’s now been achieved and we can lay this thread peacefully to rest and get on with posting wherever pleases us!

Yes and every other brand forum had one of these too, even though the photos were never particularly about the brand. A weekly thread in a general group is just as fine as topical forums, as long as the nonsense of 'post photos from your X brand camera just so that everyone knows that X brands cameras can take photos' stops.

We have a 'samples and galleries' forum already (under 'photography discussion'). Would that work or would you like a separate one? [I can't see why personally, but then that's just me]

A group of us with some 15 years of experience in Photography critique forums are working on this and we will come back to you in due course. At the moment we are familiarizing ourselves with the flat view arrangement of DPRev and considering how this might work for what we have in mind.
Critique is a huge subject. There are many, many different schools of thought and genres. There is a considerable overlap with general art critique. We are considering a forum that has two aspects. A significant volume of links and articles where photographers can build a knowledge of criteria and schools of thought on the subject. Then discussion forums where participants post images, receive critiques and critique others. We see improving our critique skills as an essential part of improving our photography. We want gentle encouragement that builds skills, not ego driven put downs of the work of others.
Within the forum there will be room for C&C threads relating to particular genres. The C&C for Street photography tends to have different criteria to that associated with Landscape for example.

I have to disagreed on the idea of "we have a sample and galleries" such that we should stop post images on gear discussion forum.

If I want to share a image, the S&G is the right place to go.

But how about a question been asked, e.g. how to select P shooting mode, would it be the simplest to post a page extracted from manual of that particular model to show where the dial is and what options are there? Not to mention more complicated features.

How about some complaints on certain gear, e.g. the sharpness of a lens? Noisy of the camera at certain ISO etc etc. Post a sample taken from that specific setup can prove not a problem on the gear. Nothing more to argue/dispute.

How about some one praise his lens and trash the other? Just posted a field sharpness map of the lenses concerned to settle any disagreement...

All of the above must be best to have a sample posted in the thread as a directly reply. I suppose it would be 1000 times more effecient than post a link to the S&G asking the interested party to look at the sample there.

A picture is better than 1000 words.

So, IMHO it is a matter of would the posted samples appropriate for the discussion of the gear concerned.
