The main purpose of this "thread" is to try out this technique of posting on DPRevived.
On our "Indiana Jones" tour of Chiapas Mexico in February we visited three Mayan Ruins.
Bonampak, Yaxchilan, and Palenque.
Here's a few shots of them.
Our first view of Bonampak. They say it is the best preserved of the Mayan ruins because it wasn't discovered by Europeans and thus the stela and artwork there are original, not replicas like at the other ruins.
It's a pretty steep climb.
There are three rooms you can go into to view the artwork. The first room's art depicts preparing for war, the second fighting a war, the third celebrating victory after a war.
They say originally, all the Mayan ruins were covered with stucco and painted like this in bright colors. These colors have faded but they were indoors and thus have survived 800+ years. Imagine how bright and impressive these structures were in their time!
This roof covers the entrance to a tunnel that runs about 30 miles to Yaxchilan as an escape route in case of war!
Yaxchilan is huge! We were too tired to climb all those steps to tour the ruins above up close.
Palenque was busiest as it is closest to a major city and we got there much later in the day. It's also very extensive.
