Hi all, as one of the admins, I am proposing the following updates to the system. It won't affect most of you, unless you constantly browse as a guest.

I'm putting this list here before I do anything to get some feedback first (we are a 'community' forum, so you can get involved if you wish to).

    Anyway, here's the list:

    • Move DPRevived news down the bottom. It's all admin stuff and not now the most important part of the system. This includes feature requests etc. We still get people posting in 'migration' when they should be posting elsewhere. By making these at the bottom, maybe that will reduce. We want photography to be the first thing people see.
    • Shorten a few of the category names (they are too long for the underlying box they live in).
    • Put in extra checks for new registrations:
    Verify by email
Add a question to be asked when registering
Check IP address with Stop Forum Spam
    • Turn pruning on for the test forum. After 30 days of inactivity, posts there will be deleted.
    • Turn off allowing guests to download attachments. This one may also preclude guests from seeing attachments (images) and is probably the most contentious one here.
    • Turn off allowing guests to browse user lists
    • Turn off allowing guests to 'like' posts
    • Turn off guest access to the DPRevived bug list and feature suggestions forums. Possibly a few others. The rationale behind this is that I expect guests to browse around, see what they like and register - at which time, they get full member access to everything.
    • Tidy up colours on the forum lists. Bob has been doing some work, but I've been lazy when creating new forums - and I need to fix that.

Feeback welcomed. I'll probably do some of it today (like the registration stuff) and some later on.

    Alan

    Sound good to me Alan.
As I'm sure that you already know, scammers and hackers have fully embraced the recent advancements in AI and most of their process are carried out (implemented) by bots.

It’s good to think about the security and integrity of this site.

    Alan,

I like the concept of turnng things off for non members. Some of the colours are definitely not visible against a white background. (And, as I wrote before, the favicon is not very visible on the black taskbars of Firefox and Safari.)

I think the arrows to go back and forth between pages should be at the top of the thread, -not at the bottom- to avoid long scrolls.

Sounds good. Maybe replace the word 'news' in DPRevived newsm or insert site: DPRevived site news

EDIT: this is meant as a reply to the opening post

I have them both on top and bottom.
    The first button is different:
At the Top, you have choices of where to go.
On the bottom, it sends you to the top by default

I'm all for not allowing guests to view images and download attachments.

If they really, really want them they can jump through the 'have to register' hoop.

I'm also all for not allowing guests to see the members list.

    All good stuff.

Maybe there should be an ongoing “introduce yourself” thread? If deemed a good idea maybe you would land on it when verifying your email address?

I think the Migration misposts are due to that forum being the default selection in the dropdown menu when starting a new thread, regardless of the subforum you're currently in - and since that is in the top right of the window, away from the blue "Start thread" button, people just miss it. Moving the meta stuff to a less prominent position is still a good idea, of course.

I'm in discussion with the developers on this so that you can't create a post if you are not in an area that allows you to do so - so the default never gets taken. But it's complicated and may not happen soon.

First try, I would just sort in a different way the drop-down menu
+ Push down the "administration" forum categories

If that doesn't suffice we can look something more complicated
