But if whoever David was doubted the authenticity or ownership of an image, imo it's only common sense and totally legitimate to ask for proof of ownership when anyone insists an image is theirs without providing anything to show it is.

    Is it not?

Just make everyone a moderator - have the general community just jump on uncivil people. Regardless of disagreements, be civil.

i think last time i posted 4 images of my daughter 10 years apart with 4 different cameras to prove it could be done.

Maybe we put a 'permaban' button on each post, so anyone can instantly permaban someone if they don't like the post. It would make things interesting. 😉

I can't agree - handles have been a feature of the internet since the start.

I do agree that the success of any forum is mainly down to the quality of the moderation, and that is something that I hope will be much improved here. I found some of the moderators at dpreview quite toxic, and willing to play favourites. It doesn't have to be that way.

It would make for a very small island in a sea of potentialities. Such a totalitarian environment leaves no room for anything other than ideal inhabitants.

Was there a membership fee for DPReview? I never saw anything like that.

As someone who values privacy, there is no way that I would give my personal details to an internet forum just to be able to talk about photography.

And as for whether anonymity ruins forums - I'm a member of Cameraderie.org and Rangefinderforum, and they are friendly and accepting places. There's the occasional bit of friction on RFF, but otherwise it's pretty plain sailing.

    First of all, happy Eastern!

Secondly: The absolute best photography forum I know is www.belgiumdigital.com/ , with an annual membership fee of € 55
    Language is Dutch.
Founded in 1999, it still works very well and is profitable.
Very friendly communication between members, sharing photography' passion, pictures and knowledge... No anonymous participation, I mean the staff knows "who is who"...

There is a topic on the closure of dpreview: translation: For free doesn't work, Dpreview closing.

TMHO the power of Dpreview was the classic written camera reviews section, not the fora.

    Kindest regards,
    Stany

Really? So > 3000 people have migrated here for the reviews?

Besides, I haven't read reviews at DPR for years. Because there were none to read. The video reviews didn't cut it for me, so I didn't watch reviews either. Waste of time.

DPR is closing because we are close to a depression and Amazon is getting rid of non essential staff. The powers that be probably don't know a thing about DPR, if they even know it exists.

I understand that you like the model you describe, but if you had read Bob's posts about his vision for the forum you would understand that will never happen here. If I thought it would I wouldn't be here.

Wow, this thread has me wondering...forced identification, adding a pay-wall, a virtual "swear jar"?
Implement all that and this place will be dead in a week.

The solution for anyone concerned about bullies is simple - an ignore button and a little self-control. If you can't manage life on the internet with that, then maybe you should consider the possibility that the issue isn't other people?

Oh, and not that it matters but I actually do use my real name, as unlikely as it may seem.

That would be a mighty small community after some troll rampaged through the forums permabanning everyone!

I'll be interested to see what DPRevived decides on moderation; I have my own ideas on mod selection, based on their long-term posting history, but we don't yet have a long-term anything yet.

That would still be more hackable information about my person, without IMO much benefit

Just put "ignore" and "complain" buttons.

That by itself doesn't prove ownership at all.

Are you not aware that it would take anyone who knows what they are doing about 5 minutes to download someone else's images and then falsify the exif data to make them look like they own the images?

  • April 9, 2023, 12:55 p.m.

But a 'permaban' button would be much more fun!
The 'complain' button is an invitation for bullying. And ignoring doesn't really need technological help. If you want to ignore someone, do it. Not very sociable, but your right.

  • April 9, 2023, 12:56 p.m.

That's true. We could have instantaneous new account creation when you've been permabanned. Then it would really be like DPReview.
