I have an 18-135 IS USM lens that sticks when zooming in or out. There's no grinding or anything, but the operation is not smooth and silky. It's kind of jerky.
I was wondering if I should put a drop of machine oil or WD40 on the barrel, or just wait for time to do its thing.

I have never taken a zoom lens apart, and cant see how to do so without wrecking mine; but I should be surprised if the action relies upon a lubricant. Do you have a Canon service center near you? It is my experience that they know what to do and do not charge an arm or a leg. Possibly the same is true of a decent local camera shop. It is worth asking them.

My Canon 18-135mm USM lens does the same thing. It doesn't really stick hard, but it can be a little "jerky" when zooming in and out. I only notice it when I'm taking video. For stills, it's a non-issue.
But for video I love using my Canon M50-MKII with the EF-M 55-200mm lens. That combination is so smooth. I don't know why, but it has been so good. The Canon EF-M 15-45mm lens is also smooth zooming in and out when I take video.

Thanks for your reply. It's helpful to know that someone else has the same problem, and yes, it's really only an issue on the video side.
I'm currently saving money to get a PZ E-1 Power Zoom adapter.
