In the past I would pack a D850 and a Z7 for my summer holiday wanderings. The Z7 and the 24-200 did the casual stuff, whilst the D850 and my shift lenses did those moments when I found time to do some serious architectural photography. For "on tripod" photography the D850 is a much nicer camera to use. Aso the Mk1 FTZ converter with its tripod mount, was a pain in the ass for tripod work with the Z7 with F lenses mounted.

Getting the FTZ II changed a lot of things. It does not foul up the Manfrotto tripod QR plates I use. I have a three legged carbon fibre monopod which can replace my heavy tripod if I am patient and let any vibrations die down enough for the IBIS to take care of the rest.

Looks like the D850 might get left at home this year, or will it?

For holidays, the lighter and smaller, the better.

Within certain bounds, I have learned to 100% agree with this. I find small/light gear and no kit/minimal kit liberating for the “typical holiday” that I venture out on.

What are those “bounds”? Well, if I’m going to spend a week in some remote venue to go birding and need a 600mm focal length……. A small camera, smartphone, etc isn’t going to work. But, for me, and for most everything else, small cameras or smartphones are perfect.

When I have the car I take a lot of stuff. When I go out and about I might just take the Z7 and the 24-200, which is pretty lightweight.

Our basic holiday kit depends on where we go, how we travel (by air, car etc etc) And even how long we will be staying somewhere.
But most of the time it will be 5 bodies (MLC/DSLR and a analog SLR) and lenses between 14mm up to 600mm.

I am fortunate that most of my photography is done in the 24-120mm range making the 24-120mm not surprisingly my choice 😀 I also take a smaller m43 body with a prime for when I want a more discrete option , or when my wife is giving me that look

If the D850 is so much nicer to work with, why leave it behind?
Obviously every holiday requires a different set up, so it isn't a hard fast rule as to what to take along. Regretting NOT taking some equipment is harder to deal with for me. Recently I've been taking one camera with three lenses to cover 16mm to 300mm range.
