I've only ever tried one Nikon and wasn't overly impressed - but that was probably 15 years ago and I can't remember what it was (D800 vaguely rings a bell). It was severely front focussing and there didn't seem to be a way of fixing it.

Nikon went through a bad quality control phase at around the period of the D300 - D800. I had problems with the rubber focusing ring on the "pro grade" 17-55. In fact I took a holiday from Nikon for a few years. I have had no problems with the Z series, and Nikon Service in Italy were very good and honestly priced when I dropped my Nikon 24mm PC.

Olympus' first micro 4/3, I've made four comparisons in recent years with this E-P1.

I compared it to the Lumix G1 and also to the GF1.

And for fun with the first 4/3, the Olympus E-1, and finally my superb Pentax 645D.

I have a G1 so was interested in that comparison.

Here's the Tedograms of the house scene:

    Lumix

    Olympus
    olympus.jpg

Both very, very good - almost equal FFT's with the Olympus very slightly better at near-Nyquist frequencies.

Your comparisons are perfect for this type of measurement because they are not resized and are of exactly the same scenes and settings!

The way you fixed it was AF - fine tune. The camera reported back a distance and the lens focused to that distance. Fine with film. Not so fine with 36 MP digital. You had to go through the process of calibrating your lenses to the camera AF. The end result was a calibration offset for the lens. Worked pretty well, although it took quite a bit of time. The exercise taught me that most lenses needed fine tuning. That's is not a problem with mirrorless.

Thanks - yes, I knew that but a lot of cameras didn't have that ability (early Canons, for example) and you had to send them away to be fixed.

I don't know if the Nikon I tried had that facility or not.
