That's promising. Thanks. I thought of the tags before I even noticed the quote marks on the top line of the reply box. I don't think I'll use that coding icon unless someone gives me lessons. I can see them eventually locking or removing that one, someone like me might make a big mess in there. Do you know what the spoiler icon does?
It didn't make a mess of the whole post. It's for displaying programming code or HTML as is. Usually it works to display the "code" used in posts without it being interpreted. But in here that didn't work. Got a strange result. The quote code was converted to a long string if digits if IIRC.
Let's see if that works normally here otherwise.

It also uses a monospaced font and doesn't compress whitespace (spaces, tabs and so on aren't converted to one singe space), so what you write displays as you wrote it, so to speak, so it's useful for other things too. For example you can make a simple table.
FRUIT apples pears bananas
MEAT pork beef lamb
VEGGIES tomatoes beans potatoes
Spoiler is so you can hide something that isn't visible until it's clicked. Like if you tell who's the killer in a detective story you can hide it so only those that want to know see it. 😉
I have been thinking about your weekly thread issues and wonder if this may be a solution for now.
Before DPRevived was started AlanSh started his own forum. He has now joined with Bobn2 and is working with him on this one. When it is all up and running the members on his site: cameradiscussion.createmybb4.com/index.php
will be merged with this one. AlanSh site (link above) does allow for a threaded view.
Could your photo weekly threads start there and then be moved over here when threaded a view is possible?
What is the - icon for? With your help I think I know the others. The eye and the bracket were mysteries now solved. I am curious but mostly want to know if anything on the screen is useful in the quest to make the loss of threaded view more bearable.
I fear using that site would just be another detour that won't last long. I'm sure Alan will close it down eventually. We may as well bite the bullet and figure out how to use this format the best way we can.
I think we'd all like threaded view, but it is one of the most difficult changes to make. No forum SW apart from DPReview does it, so far as I know, but that's hardly a comfort.
There is something that can be done if someone is willing to act as editor, and reorganise the thread. If someone wants to, start a private thread with me.
Some PHP forums used to do it, I think. Invision for sure. Don't see any such feature in their own support forum now. They called it Outline. When turned on you got the flat view as usual, then under it you had the thread tree. Clicking a post in the thread tree took you to the post in the flat view.
So not as it used to be before things went flat, but it worked.
I realise that the more recent forum work has all been directed to using them on phones. This one works very well on a phone, not so well on desktop. One reason it works so differently to the others is that it's much newer. There must be a good way of doing threaded view in a phone -friendly way.
My first post on DPRevived - thought I'd try editing Charlotte's post - just removed her screen image - I would prefer a threaded forum but this may work until either it improves or something else comes along.
Sorry - looks like I responded to an old post from the middle of this thread. That's awkward.
Hum - I was going to insert a picture, but, apparently it has to be uploaded somewhere first? That's a PITA.
Edit: I think I've added an image now. Rainbow over Lake Te Anau.
Guess I need to study the editing more, but it seems pretty reasonable.
No fear. You just used the wrong button. Use the Attach button, the up-arrow.
When you have uploaded the picture you'll see the filename to the lower left in the box you type in. Click the icon to the right of the name, the one that looks like a square, and a larger image will be embedded in the post at the cursor. But you only see the forum code for it until you post or preview.
Thanks Charlotte - I'd figured that out before seeing your reply - which came while editing my prior post.
I see clicking on the image in a post displays it in a different tab filling that tab with the image (thus my 1920x1200 rainbow image fills my 4k monitor when my browser window is maximized). Nice.
FYI - Charlotte - the _ icon after the crossed out T and before the link icon is for putting in a row of dots across your post (I believe this is called a rule as in a line drawn with a ruler). I put one in my prior message before the photo but it's so faint I can barely see it.
Thanks so much! I will probably start a private thread soon, after I get feedback from the other 3 who lead the Critique weekly thread (I am merely the advance scout, not the sole decision maker). Would also want to invite meow and WhyNot in such a conversation since they are in a similar dilemma with threads they participate in. As far as acting as our editor for the C&C thread, I am willing to try, no great expertise here though.
I know threaded view is a hard problem to solve. I've been through this with a phpBB based forum and we eventually gave up. That's why I don't want to take the wait-for-it approach.
I just noticed that on a long thread like this -- you see a limited number of posts to move beyond that first set one has to click one of the options that indicate going to more posts .. but once there one can navigate back to the top or to another page only by clicking the controls at the bottom of the page to return to the top. the controls at the top do not work .... Maybe a unique experience??? I post here because this thread is active and this might be read .
I think I see what you mean. The posts are divided into "pages" for lack of a better term. The controls on the bottom work to navigate forwards/backwards or to the final or first page, but the controls at the top don't seem to do anything at all.
And yes, posting in active threads gets more notice than starting a new one, I've learned that too, a reasonable thing.
I intend to try to start a private thread later today about formatting options for our thread, will you participate? Your ideas are helpful and the dilemma your thread has is similar. I hope meow will join too, I'll do an invite if I can figure out how to work that. I've seen some info about it somewhere.
