I second minniev. It is of utmost importance to have ability to converse via threaded view. Hopefully 2026...???!!!

Agree, it really is now or never.
That said, The easiest way to increase traffic here is for participants to link to it when in other parts of the web.
But it's going to take more than "this week's offerings" to hold them, sooner or later we will have to start Brand based discussions.
Like it or not, nothing generates more traffic than the latest release, or fanboi worship of classic old models.
Maybe start sideways with a "Living with Brand X's latest toy" by real owners here, people do like to chime in if they have one too.
The site is also very light on in Tech world too, all we can do there, is invite contributions, I guess.

Ron, we are not a gear forum. If we started down that route, we would be in competition with all the others out there, and that's not our intent. Sure, we have one forum where you can discuss gear, but that's it. I'm happy if people want to discuss it there, but that's as far as we go.

It's going to be extremely difficult to maintain that position going forward.
Photogs love gear and love talking about it even more.
The issue really is, how can the site inject it without putting more work on your shoulders.
Maybe a Forum that allowed free advertorials, buyer beware, no one ever knocked backed free advertising that I ever heard of.
And, just quietly, you ARE in competition with everybody else, like it or not.
Intent is one thing, the real world is another, let it slip, life is way too short.

    Hi,

Well, you were a gear forum initially. Get Threaded View going and you could revert, or just add back in, that part and have functionality the other guys are kicking to the curb.

I have no more gallery over there and altered my bio from one that kept getting longer over 25 years to a very short one. Essentially, I am Done with them save for two low traffic forums. And one of those, the Kodak SLR forums (which holds all of the first couple years worth of technical discussions) is really at Zero these days. That leaves the Medium Format forum.

    Wow.

I guess I should set up a webbed garden chair in my front yard, and start screaming at the neighbor kids to "GET OFF MY LAWN", because, yes, I prefer threaded view.

And, yes, I am a DPReview regular. And, yes, I tried working with flat view sites, including this one for quite a while, as a bunch of DPR regulars moved over here when the alternative sites first started. But, honestly, threaded view is FAST. You can pick and choose what you do or don't want to read without having to wade through unrelated posts, which can get numbingly boring in a hurry.

And, threaded view is the single most important reason that I ended up not continuing to post at any of the alternative sites when DPR came back from the dead.

So, now, here we are, with DPR joining the flat view brigade. And, here I am, almost 15,000 posts in, knowing full well that my future participation there will be...limited. And, I am disappointed. And, yes, looking around again to see if there are any alternative sites that will work better for how I prefer to view and communicate.

But, here's the thing: I don't look down my nose at people who choose flat format. And, some of us "geezers" actually are not crusty old idiots who think we should go back to stone knives and bearskins. So, coming here and reading snarky posts about how DPR is stuck in the past because of all of the dinosaurs there, who are all going to die anyway is just freakin' rude.

If you are lucky, you will get old. And, maybe, just maybe, you will understand some things that you clearly do not, right now.

i was only saying to my 22 yold daughter the other day that 25 years on and programers are worst now than back in 2000 when DPR was created. i still vouch that when i was working for Apple (1986-7) Excel was way easier to design and intergrate complex spread sheets on than the excel i have on my computer now. Or maybe im getting old and have lost my ability to use the complex (full of fluff 😁) systems of today. you have another vote for threaded view.

No, you are right about Excel, it's a bloated, interfering mess, so far from the simple tool it once was, as to render it pointless.
I'm pretty annoyed at tackling another learning curve for Libre Calc at my age, but eventually, even I, can take a hint.
I still miss Lotus and mourn the loss of 3DCalc.
Your 2000 statement might be true too, but, this might amuse in 2025,

It would be helpful if the „threaded view lobby“ would not keep reminding other members how crucial they consider its incorporation to be for a serious site. We have received the message and have been assured by Alan that efforts to provide it are proceeding apace behind the scenes.

In the meantime, I second the proposal that selective quoting at the beginning of a post is a good way to alert readers to the intent of one‘s contribution to a thread. The ascribed writer of the text quoted needs to be correct, unlike at least one quotation in this thread inaccurately ascribed to me, which might cause confusion.

As far as threads on gear are concerned, I personally am in favour of them. If done in a disciplined way, it should be obvious to those who are not interested in such discussions to stroll on and move to those threads that do interest them. Clear and accurate thread titles and quotations help greatly in this matter.

At the moment the number of interactions per day with this site is much less than it was with DPR at the point of its recent freezing. Accordingly, DPR has a greater number of well-differentiated forums which successfully serve its larger number of active members. In the future, when we have more members and greater participation, it may be appropriate to increase the number of forums here and broaden the conversation.

Bom site is pathetic, im wondering what were they thinking. i use it all the time and always had the link saved for my area. Gympie radar. in fact we have storms over me now that im tracking. the worst part is you cant save a link to your area ,so i have to type in the radar every time i want to view the current systems 😒it just doesnt make sense, its worst than the perfectly good working site it was. DPR main page says we are upgrading the site, but in fact they are downgrading it.

I believe forums like this evolve in a way that cannot be predicted. This forum was born to replicate the gear orientated DPR, but morphed into a picture orientated forum, reflecting the members interests. A bit of gear talk is good, and to many picture threads can be boring after a while. The thing is to have a happy mix.

With the massive decline in people buying cameras, I think the gear forum does not have much future. DPR obviously did not have the budget to keep the old system going, and are now using the forum system that its sister forums use.

I prefer threaded view, but on a few forums I visit, I manage to live with flat view.

    Here you go

But I believe they are reverting back to the original anyway after all the kerfuffle.

There's not a lot of difference. Most of the functions behave the same. Some of the more powerful features may may not be there - I couldn't get solve to work but that could have been me coupled with less than explicit documentation...

That strikes home as I sit in my wheelchair in front of the computer at 85 after neck spine surgery and a triple bypass, barely able to walk unaided and with permanently shaking hands. Not much tenure left for me; thanks for the reminder ...

    Hope it's true.
Now if we can just stop them sexing up every puff of wind and raindrop during interviews, we'll know we're not on a commercial station. Just the facts, Ma'am, is all that's required and crying wolf will undoubtedly have the predictable result.

Thanks for the Libre gee up, FWIW I'm finding "find the video" more effective than "find some documentation".
Most of it doesn't bother me, but converting/trouuble-shooting my older/bigger macros down the track, worries me.
