I've got a very busy month in September, so can't promise to sort out a weekly winner competition. So, I'm going to make it a monthly competition for September (and probbaly October if it's successful).

So you have time to search out a really great picture and post it here. And lots of time to vote for good pictures (just like it and that is your vote).

What happened to the tower on the right? It looks distorted, but the church looks fine.

Earthquakes and subsidence damage are pretty normal in this mountain area. It is pretty common to find leaning church towers in this area. Much of the Garfagnana was flattened during an earthquake in 1920.

The Church here Pieve di San Paolo di Vendaso was indeed almost flattened by the earthquake in 1920 and rebuilt in 1925. I don't think the distortion is related to that...I think Alan met a photgraphic distortion (may be wrong of course)

This area cannot be just photographic distortion - parallel lines should remain parallel (for rectilinear lens):

Another possibilty is that main building has slanted walls and entire image is overcorrected.

Since the red line around the church and the tower shows that the horizontal distance between them as seen from the camera is very small, I fail to understand how the lens, or any processing, could change the angle of the verticals in this way.

Agreed it looks weird. Does this photo help explain it?

Here is a grid overlay. The camera was levelled on a tripod and seems to be about right ( the fence on the LH side)

    DSC_7335 1.jpg

Here is a previous shot taken with a 24mm PC. The tower kind of leans and is curved, due to compaction of the mortar on one side.

This is pretty common with church towers in this part of the world. Vendaso is on the side of a mountain and earth movement and earthquake have distorted the structure. Take a look at the walls on the extreme sides.

The Laowa 15mm PC lens is very nicely corrected and might show some stretching on the edges.
