This is the second week we have tried using the poll and only 17 people voted this week.

Do we continue with it, but have a separate thread to condense the images into one post?
Or, do we go back to the 'likes' method?
Or something else? If you voted for that, please put a comment in here.

    Let me know.

Perhaps there are too many similar “…. Photo of the week” threads or similar running. For a small site, too many possible places to post an image leads to small participation in all of them. Despite a headline participant count of almost 4000, the user data suggests that fewer than 50 can be counted as regular posters.

A look back at dprevived.com/c/image-discussions-critiques-and-challenges/48/ shows a continuing downward trend to participation in regular threads. I refer to Canon Photos, Wednesday C&C, This Week Through Your Eyes, etc. Is this due to winter, the lack of build out and development of the site, or what?

The method chosen will not change the number of visits.
The reason there are few votes could be because there were few visits during the voting period or the photos aren't good enough to merit the vote of some members.
To increase the number of visits I suggest sending an email to all members who have visited Dprevived in the last 30 days, letting them know that the voting period has started and also encouraging them to participate with photos in next week's contest.

    My thoughts:
    1. Competitions should be by theme. For instance you can not compare macro photography picture to let's say landscape picture.
    2. Voting time has to be longer. Some people are busy over weekend and do not get to vote.
    3. I think to make votes by 5 star ratings would be too complicated.

Given that there are not a lot of people active, I think the vote by like is going to attract more votes because it is available all week. The poll requires people to come back at the weekend just to vote. I don't mind that I can't retract a like. I rarely vote on all images, and just like the ones that stand out to me. Some weeks there are more than others that I will like.

Is there no competition this week whilst we decide - or have I just failed to see it?

No, I haven't started one yet. I'll sort it out later tonight or early tomorrow. But from the votes so far, the 'likes' are in the ascendant.

That's about my calculation of the numbers as well.

That's OK. I run a motorcycle forum where we probably only have 10 regular contributers (if that) but I wouldn;t consider closing it.

This forum and the associated site will grow over time. And the regular posters are all quality people who I am happy to have here.

Alan, can you pin ongoing weekly competitions globally? I think this may help to gain attention :)

So, it looks like the 'likes' are OK as a voting method. Are you still OK with that? New competition started tonight.

    It works for me.

But if I may put out a different thought. At the start you said no comments during submission. I sorta thought I would like to make the odd comment on some pics but the decision was ok.

But now the thread gets closed after voting so there is no opportunity for discussion about a particular pic after the comp...

Not that I want the thread full of comments, and I agree now that during submission, comments should be at a minimum (because some don't know the rules), but I would like to be able to occasionally discuss a pic after winner announced.

    Possible? Any thoughts?

Sure. I can just leave it open for comments once the voting has closed.

I'll try that for next weeks one.
