I think using the Photo of the Week as a prominent image on the front page can only be good advertising for us, particularly given the high quality of the winners.

I would, however, broaden the competition to allow us to nominate the photos of other members, rather than being restricted to self-nomination.

    What do others think?

Ain't that what the voting is for?

Also, as an "artist" I don't like others doing things with my work I don't approve of. Not that I suspect any maliciousness here, but the issue is still the same.

But why restrict the voting to those photos that have been self-nominated?

I am not proposing that anybody do anything with your work, other than recognise its merit by proposing it for “Photo of the Week”, thus allowing others to vote for it to receive the award, if they agree.

Regard this as a “like very much” button.

I like the idea of nominating other photos that have been submitted somewhere on the DPRev site. I see some pretty grand ones whose "owners" do not submit them in that thread. It's a nice way to show that we are looking around this place and noticing the good stuff. If someone has already posted it here they clearly don't mind others here seeing it. I belong to a couple of sites that do something similar.

We can always ask authors for permission to use their images [in different context here], then it is for them to decide.
For weekly/monthly competitions we can state this [using winning image on forum landing site] already in competition conditions, this way if someone does not want to see his/her work on homepage, he/she can just not participate.

Of course posting image here on some threads and not wanting to see it on forum main page is somewhat nonsensical situation - but we can never know.

Just because someone posted an image some place, doesn't mean they agree for it to be posted elsewhere. As long as permission is asked I have no qualms.

I would object to that statement.

Even though it's on-line and could be seen by anyone, posting it buried in a thread buried in a forum that isn't frequented by many means very few will see it, and in my case, that is exactly the point. If I wanted many people to see my photography, I would use one of those social media places to post it, but I don't, intentionally, since I see little value in sharing photos unless they are there to make some technical or other point about photography or the world.

I don't think that is a very good idea at all. Consider the casual / hobbyist photographers who post in PotW with a chance of winning. Suddenly every week the best shots from across the whole site get nominated and the bar really jumps for the hobbyist and he wont bother posting anymore.

Also, as LeeJay, said, some may post a pic to make a point and wouldn't necessarily want that pic copied elsewhere.

Down the track a more formal competition like the challenges on DPR might work. But I like the informality of PotW.

Better not to include images from other threads, this would be not a competition anymore.
It is possible to create some "Editors' pick" kind of category/forum/thread, where best images can be presented; depend on new front page design there can be place for them on front page too.

For now, let's leave it as it is.

    Cheers
