In Italy, photography in public monuments was banned until quite recently. But thanks to a few morons will cell phones, things are not looking good again.

Members of the Instagraming sheeple have recently damaged a painting in the Uffizi, and wrecked a sculpture in Verona.

I have found a link in English that explains what is happening.

The Director of the Uffizi, is making dark comments about photography in the gallery. I hope this is not going to set a trend, that makes photography in public monuments and museums impossible again, thanks to the cretins who visit cultural places, just to post stuff on bucket list obsessed social media, rather than experience the artistic magic.

I find it strange that the public are allowed anywhere near "priceless" works of art. There will always someone, no matter how innocently or otherwise, who will manage to damage important things like that. If the people can't get so close, I don't see the need to ban cameras.
Looks like he is going to have to cough up for the repair bill...

People used to have more respect for artwork compared to today, so maybe the Uffizi is still living in the past by not protecting their exhibits, at least with some sort of barriers.

I can remember going to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris in the late 90s, no barriers between the visitors and the famous paintings, people simply had more respect, and of course, Selfies didn't exist back then.

It's not just selfies that art galleries have trouble with. Look at the disgusting behaviour in this video.
