You're free to choose what you like, and DPReview users are free to go where they like. Just please don't post disinformation about us.

We did start from an existing forum software system - Misago.
    So, selection process: -
We don't intend to be just a forum - so we don't want a stand-alone forum solution - we want something built as an application on a robust web framework.
We want the software to be open source, so we can develop it to our needs, not depend on a supplier to develop it for us (apart for anything, we can't afford that).
We want a framework which has been used in substantial sites.
The one selected was Django, which powers for instance Instagram, Mozilla, National Geographic.
Then we selected for forum systems available.
The criteria were rapidity of install (because we had a short deadline)
Currently still developing and supported (many forums softwares are dormant)
    Potential for development
    Underlying functionality

None of the existing forum systems can duplicate what DPReviews own software does, which is why we need one that can develop. None of the other sites can change the functionality from what they have now, which is why they can get irritable if asked. We start with something unfamiliar, but have the ability to tailor itto our needs.
No PHP system can provide the development potential and the reliability without continuing support that we needed. In the end the list came down to two, and the one that was packaged for a very quick start was Misago.

In the end it comes down to this - our ambition is greater than yours. Potential users are free to chose whether they want to go somewhere which will always be just forums, or somewhere which will develop into something bigger.

I will be joining anything to do with Facebook the day after "never".

And I will correct my "Quick Facts". I didn't intend to "disinformation/misinformation"; I just didn't know much about DPRevived.

Hi, what is the purpose of this thread? It seems very strange to post about a competing forum here.

I have no idea but DPDiscuss isn't a Forum it's a Faceplant (page)

It’s not much competition either. I just had a quick sample of a few of their groups, and the membership of each was single digits.

Even the DPForum is quite empty in posting. Most categories don’t even have a single post yet.

Think of these categories as shelves in a library. To be filled with books as time goes bye.
With over 1600 members in days, this site is very successful.

I can understand why a lot of people have negative feelings about Facebook, but Facebook is like anything else, and is what a person makes of it.

I must not be a sentient citizen (as one other person put it) because I like some Facebook photography related groups. I love the Sony RX1 series of cameras, and Facebook has a very good “RX1 World Shooters” group.

Much more information and talk about the RX1 series, there, than on DPR.

Just the same, everyone is different, and as I said, I can understand why some people stay away from Facebook.

In what way are the two even comparable ? dpdiscuss is literally just 70+ facebooks groups in a trenchoat.

On the subject of misinformation, are you feeling proud about this post where you try to imply that a few minutes of scheduled maintenance on this site this morning (something that even DPReview needed from time to time) is proof that it can’t be relied on? www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66986901

Please just give up on your FB idea, which despite your now constant spamming at DPR has completely failed. I had a good look through your groups yesterday and couldn’t find even one with a membership into double figures. There are already well established FB photography and brand groups for those that want them; they aren’t a replacement for a proper forum like this and never will be.

At this point, and observing some of your tactics, I’m seriously starting to doubt your good intentions. Had DPDiscuss taken off it would be a pretty good like farm for someone.

Facebook is essentially an intelligence gathering operation with a very dodgy history. If you think the Chinese Social Credit scoring system is great you'll love it. Personally I value my privacy so the chances of me ever having an account on there are less than zero. I mean posting photos with exif and possibly location data on a site surreptitiously using facial recognition and a whole suite of data harvesting tools, what could possibly go wrong? That's probably the worst call since the Sinclair C5.

Hi Rafal. Firstly thank you very much for joining bobn2's team here on this forum to help out. I'm sure you will be a very big help :-)

Secondly, from your post I can see now how to embed youtube videos in posts which is very handy and useful as well.

Lastly, and this is just my (and hopefully other members as well) personal wish list feature for this forum. I see that the "[img]" BBcode tag is enabled on this forum but unfortunately any CSS styles added to the tag to size and position images in a post are completely ignored when the post is previewed.

Is implementing CSS styles for the "[IMG]" bbcode tag on your to-do list? It would be very useful and user friendly to be able to position images side by side in a post for comparison or whatever purposes. Something like this:

    [img style="float:right;width30%"]pathname to image[/img]

    Who cares?
What matters is community. I don’t care if we have 1,000 or 100,000 members. I don’t care if we have all the features.

I’ve worked in high tech for 30+ years and I can tell this place has a lot of extremely talented people who offer advice. As a community, DPRevived is off to a fantastic start, because we have some fantastic people here.

It’s all about the people. The features are nice, for sure, but 99.9% is a community, where we can learn, share, have fun, and become better photographers. I appreciate Bob and the others so much for building this community.
