Black crowned night heron at Woodley Island Marina. They sleep all day and aren't photogenic whilst snoozing. They are also misnamed. Every one I have seen has a blue crown.

The hawks left early this year. This is the last day I found some, 26 February. This one refused to fly, it's just after lunch and it probably was full of squirrel and digesting. I stayed back and let it ruminate. We stared at each other for a while and I blinked first and left.

The weeks between the hawk migration and flowers remove two of my main subjects. I go to the garden centers and get a few flowers to tide me over. This tulip got its petals blown off on a windy day.

Nice set, Rich .... I like you night heron .... I've only seen one locally .. he had insomnia or wanted a beer as he was sitting in a tree overlooking the porch of the tavern where we have a Chicago Dog and a Kolsch for lunch … I am intrigued by that beautiful qajaq chained to a fire hydrant, great woodwork .. I think it would look good next to your computer … did you buy a ticket??

Thanks, WhyNot. I'd like to catch one of those night herons coming into a tightly branched tree. They come in very hot, fold their wings, and go in between the branches feet first to grab a branch and just stop dead. It would be very lucky to catch that with a camera.

Nope, no kayak tickets for me. Just what don't I need is something which attracts termites. Rich

The kayak is beautiful! Is the deck made of some kind of hide? Maybe the hull too? The deck seems to be sewn together along the middle.

    Did you buy a ticket?

I have no idea of how that kayak is built, or what with, Charlotte. As it is Inuit, there are likely hides involved.

Why should I buy a ticket for that when I can swim as well as a walrus? And, I have plenty of blubber for cold water insulation.

Look up Maligiaq Padilla and you buy a ticket. Rich

Because it's pretty. I would have bought a ticket if I had been there. Afraid shipping would kill me.

A lovely set of photos Rich, as usual. I'm partial to your Night Heron.

You would survive the shipping, Charlotte. They would pack you in bubble wrap, styrofoam, and excelsior and ship you right to it. Then you could paddle your way home via The Northwest Passage. It's like pedaling except there is no fee involved. 🤣 Rich

Thanks, Jim. When their eyes are open they look like they spent Saturday night on Lake Street. Rich
