Canon autofocus is amazing to me, so I was surprised when I had a chance to photograph a pair of sandhill cranes up close and the camera would only briefly focus on the head at best. Then I looked at the pics and realized they have read eyes.

All in all I was impressed at how small a bird in the frame the autofocus would pick up.

Edit: this lack of emojis is giving me flashbacks to the '80s when the internet was still a twinkle in someones eye and arpanet hosted news groups were the cool kid on the block.

Emojis have been a part of most operating systems for a while as Unicode characters, for example on the latest versions of Windows you can press Ctrl + . (period) to access the emoji panel, iPhone and iPad have a button on their keyboard etc.

I believe that AF sees in gray scale...color does not matter...same for metering...

You could be right. For the sandhill crane tone of red for the eye and head are close to the same. No contrast = no eye detect.
