    hi
i noticed you have moved the sigma forum under the l mount category. a lot of us, maybe most of us coming from dpreview use foveon cameras which are either fixed lenses or the older sa mount.

can the forum possibly be moved back under other manufacturers or maybe under its own category as foveon is a special and popular case that dosnt fit under l mount like the fp.

ill link this to the sigma forum here and on dpreview and hopfully get more feedback from the sigma camera users.

    great forums btw.

    thank you

Sorry - I thought that Sigma, being part of the L Mount consortium, would use them.

I'll move it back to other camera for now.

The fp and fp L are L-mount cameras; the rest are their own thing.

This is equally true for most Leica and Panasonic cameras. However, maybe the primary issue here is naming? If the group was called "L-mount Alliance members" instead of systems, then it would be helpful in grouping posts about SL/CL/TL, S1/S5 and fp cameras while also being a reasonable organization of the brands themselves.

I can do that. And then add a new forum called "Sigma FP". How would that sit with the members?

Let's first look at the split at the old DPR:

Leica Talk: Every Leica camera welcome
Sigma Camera Talk: Every Sigma camera welcome
Panasonic Compact Camera Talk: Every non-ILC Panasonic camera
Micro Four Thirds Talk: M4/3 cameras from both Panasonic and Olympus

Hence, when the first L-mount Panasonic camera arrived, the old DPR added a Panasonic FF Talk (www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4323615). That aligned well with the Leica and Sigma forums, but was different from how Panasonic M4/3 users liked to communicate across brands with Olympus users. Hence, the forum was renamed to L-mount Talk.

The end result is that the L-mount Talk forum is the place to discuss L-mount lenses and Panasonic cameras, while most discussions around Leica and Sigma L-mount cameras take place in the respective Leica and Sigma Talk forums. I think that's fine, because a separate Sigma L-mount (or "fp) forum will make exactly zero sense once they launch their Foveon L-mount camera which is more naturally discussed among other Sigma Foveon users.

The hierarchy model of this site is quite nice in grouping together connected forum threads under one umbrella, but some forums clearly belong under multiple top levels, making this tricky. It would be natural to have a Panasonic FF Talk Forum inside a L-mount header, but also inside a Panasonic header.

My suggestion above, based on the assumption that we can't have multiple parents for a given Forum/Category, was to keep L-mount brands together somehow, but not imply that it's only about L-mount. Something like:

    L-mount Alliance members
    - L-mount Talk
    - Leica Talk
    - Sigma Camera Talk
    - Panasonic FF Talk

That still doesn't solve the Panasonic issue of being split between "Olympus, Panasonic, and Micro Four Thirds" and "L-mount Alliance members", though, so I'm not entirely satisfied with my own suggestion. But adding a Sigma fp forum would not be a solution to anything.

I’d rather be inclusive than split things up, at least when the lack of a traffic overload allows it.

I have both a Sigma fp and a Lumix S5 as L-Mount cameras. I’d like to discuss both together in the same forum; they use the same lenses, and I like being able to compare and contrast with all other cameras using the same lenses, regardless of manufacturer.

I also see where it can make sense to discuss cameras in a manufacturer forum, for things related to the manufacturer or comparing different cameras within the same brand. So I understand and support general Leica, Panasonic and Sigma forums separate from L-mount. (On the old DPR, I didn’t see much discussion of the fp on the L-mount forum, and was told they were mostly discussed in the Sigma forum, but never got around to checking them out; so when things started up here, and I didn’t see any activity in the L-mount forum, I thought I’d try posting on the fp there.)

I’m not really happy with this either, though I agree a separate Sigma fp forum isn’t helpful.

Both Sigma and Leica owners seem to be unhappy with their entire identities lumped in under ‘L-mount’, but also don’t like being lumped in with defunct brands like Kodak and Samsung. I’m not sure what else to do, though - is there actually enough traffic to justify the kind of fragmentation we’re talking about here?

What I’d rather see is a more general consolidation across the site, and then start splitting sub-forums back out if there’s too much traffic for a broader forum to handle. There seems to be some brand pride involved - I saw a Leica post complaining about how Leica didn’t have a top-level forum identity while Pentax did - so I’m not sure how to handle that. But unless traffic justifies it, I’m not happy with a lot of forum fragmentation- it makes the home page a complicated mess and it Balkanizes discussion. I’d rather see a single active L-mount forum getting regular posts than a separate Sigma fp forum that gets one post every few days.

    Greetings
    I'd like to see a
    Sigma Foveon forum
    and a
    L-mount Alliance members
The Sigma Foveon forum isn't good the way it is. It's bad and turns a lot of Sigma users off and they look elsewhere.

    Good luck
    Roger J.

    Roger,

This goes against the post above. And you haven't explained why the current forum is 'bad'. Can you expand on your comment a bit?

… Ignore this “Roger”. He is a shill for another forum, and is presently lobbying at the DPR forum for this other forum. Saying that the Sigma forum there is “bad” is complete nonsense. Hopefully, he will come around, and be a constructive member of this forum.

Hi Alan Sh. First of all thank you for the time and efforts you are devoting to this new forum. That said, the fact that you consider that Sigma cameras and especially the Sigma Community (dpreview) do not deserve the same status as Nikon, Canon, etc. it saddens me and makes me uncomfortable, especially because of the lack of knowledge it shows.
My intention is not to tell you how to do your job, it is just to record why DPRevived does not finish convincing me today. Greetings.

    Josep,

I have said this before, but I really don't want to have one section with just one forum in it. It makes the lists even longer than they are today. It really doesn't make sense (to me).

If you (and others) could convince me that the Sigma forum could be split into two or more forums (L mount and 'other' mount) and that there would be enough chatter in each to keep them active, then I will do it.

Nothing is further from my intention to divide the Sigma forum.
Goodbye, with the wish that the meaningless end up having it :)
