We're all glad this is here, but I and many others don't like the name DPRevived. Ok, it was fun and a joke for a kick off, but now, no. Let's be a bit more serious about this site's name. I even saw a thread locked on another site, as someone suggested they read it as DP Deprived !! - I've done that also.
This isn't primarily a Review site - which DPR started out as, and was it's main pull (despite the growing forums over the years). Review is a noun, it's a thing, a review. Revived isn't a thing, it's a verb, referring to something else, so is already vague and dispersing. This site should be a 'thing' throughout, positive.
Don’t agree at all, I think DPRevived makes perfect sense and should stay. Amongst the many other boards vying for the title, it seems to have gained some traction and brand recognition as the natural successor to DPR, and to start tinkering with the name now would only squander that lead and risk confusing everyone.
DPR was never the official brand of DPReview but was a common nickname which DPRevived can inherit nicely. Both your suggested names reference the old place in the same way, but don’t describe what this site is as well, which is DPR brought back - aka revived. The fact that DPRevived looks a bit like DPReview at first glance (while being entirely, and legally, a different name) is a neat trick too.
In short the existing name is smart, self explanatory, and is doing the job of catching the eye and pulling people in. Don’t fix what isn’t broken.
...I take your points, and agree. Though I still find DPRevived a bit weird (and always wonder if I've spelled it correctly every time I type it! - did I type deprived?)
But maybe a bit weird is a la mode, and I just need to 180.
Is it just a case of the logo or whatever having a lowercase r
DPrevived - then I read revived clearly as a word without connecting the 'du' and 'pr' of the D and PR with the 'vived'.
Something's not right, but I guess it's stuck now.
I see your point but at tge moment I feel it is way, way too early to change the name.
Changing the name now will lead to only confusion for people sitting on the fence at the moment before deciding which forum to join.
Maybe in a few months when things have settled down and become more established would be a more appropriate time to consider a name change for thus site.
Maybe based on what others are saying also, it's just a matter of presentation - upper and lowercase.
lower case d and p have a nice rotational symmetry about them, and REVIVED is strong - the message.
How about this? :
It has a font size change, to increase the lowercase size, and I added the blue to further differentiate the revived message. Further tweaks I made just distracted from it's simplicity, but of course it could be evolved in perspective and rendered in 3D with shine etc.
I even like writing and seeing dpREVIVED. Though I know many have politeness issues with uppercase (hence everything that should even be in title-case going lower-case 20 years ago - which is looking a bit old-hat to me now) ...but uppercase was for centuries the norm for titles and letters show off their simple graphic full-form shapes in uppercase - so should be allowed back in.
I think the consensus is to stick with the existing. Plus your uppercase R separates the 'before' from the 'after', making the after look like 'e-store'.
My suggestion of DPForums at the top of here has largely been taken up by DPR Clone, they are becoming DPRforum.com
good choice on many levels (all nouns for a start + not harking back to what was).
Without 'forum' in the the name though, I hope this site can expand to reviewing gear, maybe even have a studio scene with a comparison tool?
I saw when I was over there that you were asking the admin guy to make some modifications to the site according to your preferences as well, just like here.
Maybe you could build your own forum website exactly to your own specifications? ;-)
I saw that they're doing that. Not sure it's a good idea right now, with a transition in progress, but we'll see. And certainly my view was that this site would expand to be more than just a forum site. That's one reason I chose a software base which was expandable, even if its forum wasn't as slick as some of the others.
To be honest, I don't think the name is that important, or that much of the technical stuff. It's the people, and whether they find this a good place to be.
I think that’s exactly it, build the right community with the right culture and it simply doesn’t matter what it’s called, the name will stick and take on a life and meaning of its own.
FWIW I think DPRforums is a terrible name, far too limiting and generic. As much as the forums are the heart of the site, it would be great if it could become more than that in time.
that's rather curt. I asked about the option to have a threaded view to posts.
I'm not the only member asking for this, and it would be an option, 'flat' or 'threaded' view. There are many reasons to have a threaded view for long threads but I wont go into them here.
Anyway Dirk over there said the software they are running on, is not open to change and has pretty much remained the same over the years. All their sister sites are bundled into this inertia. His reticence was purely based on the fact he has no ability to change anything, it's all off the shelf, and there's no options for adding a threaded view. Here, the programmer of the software this site is running on, is a member, so I hope some of our requests are taken seriously and not glibly bounced via a joke.
Either my request for the option to have a threaded view is ludicrous and I'm entirely up my own branch, or it is a sensible basic request. One or the other.
In this thread though I was merely voicing many peoples concerns as to the site's name, the conclusion of this thread is that the site's name is fine, I just offered another way of seeing it,
I think as a new site we need to very careful about language and tone. Let's make this place very welcoming to refugees until it is established. I realise your rebuke is very mild and accompanied with a smiley, but it's a new start!
Threaded view would be great - and will be on the list for the dev team, when we have a dev team. There are two categories of changes that we can make. One is changes to style and layout, which we can do quite quickly. The second is things that need mods to the underlying software - that takes more time. It's best not to assume that things aren't being done because no-one agrees, and also to have a bit of patience, given the magnitude of what we've collectively taken on - replicating 25 years of development and growth.
Agreed. I'm as liable as anyone to cause unintended offence, but shall we all just try to be a bit careful for the moment? I see the problem like this, we all have a bit more leeway between friends, and on forums like this you're liable to see people as friends. However it's not as rich a communication medium as face to face communication, and you have less feedback about how people will react to what you say, so just be a bit more careful.
I like this idea, it's far enough from the original (which was all-uppercase) and close enough to maintain the historic correlation. The colour scheme is also good IMO.
